  • I recently had a meeting at my house for the purpose of organizing a social function at my chapel.  After about 20 or 30 minutes of discussion, one of the men started smoking a cigarette.  I asked him to either go outside or to put it out.  I personally don't care whether he smokes, but I hate the smell and believe it to be unhealthy, so I don't want it in my house.

Well, evidently this was extraordinarily rude of me.  I was told by at least three people there that I was being an ungracious host, that it was none of my business, and that if I was going to be like "liberal socialists" when it came to smoking, they wanted nothing to do with me.  So they got up and left.

I've developed a thick skin over the past few years, so I'm not worried about what they think of me, but I just was wondering what other people thought about the situation.  Was I out of line for not wanting smoking in my own house?

  • You were totally within your rights (and I'm a smoker).  It probably depended on what and how you said it and your tone of voice.
However, nowadays any smoker should ask permission to smoke inside before lighting up.
Alll you had to say was, " I'm sorry but we have a smoke free house but feel free to smoke on the porch (garage, patio, etc).

  • I am on your side.  They were rude.  They should have asked if it was ok to smoke.

  • They, and he, abused your hospitality.

My experience is that hospitality is a rare and precious thing and it is not something to be abused but valued.

He was in your home and he should have respected your polite request.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.
