Maybe they should be covered, after all.

You have to be practical.  One must dress differently in church vs at home.  Modesty standards apply to both places but it's acceptable to wear jeans and a tshirt at home, while such clothes in church, absent an emergency, would be offensive.

Most clothing sold today is not designed for sleeves to reach the elbow.  That's not the style.  If one wears such clothing is it a sin?  It depends.

In church, yes.  Outside church?  No.

If one has a short-sleeved shirt to wear to church, then you must put on a sweater or something else to cover more of your body.  Most catholics know, and do this.

I don't think that any outside-of-church clothing is immodest if the sleeves are mid-arm.  Clothes just aren't made this way.

The bigger problem, by far, is tight clothes and showing off legs.  If catholics today were to combat these areas, God would be pleased.  I see no sense in arguing about upper arms (except for inside church) when most people are wearing tight/too short clothes.

The fact that people have a problem following the standards of the Church is despicable.

The Church doesn’t care about your wretched practicality.

How far do you want to take this “not binding” straw man? Do you ignore your father’s direction because he’s not infallible? Do you ignore the priests sermons because they aren’t infallible? What about the priest’s advice in the confessional? Do you infallibly know you are absolved and in the state of grace? No, the Council of Trent teaches we cannot be certain of this, but you don’t seem to care about that as much as excusing yourself from one of the simplest precepts possible, which is putting on clothing!

Do you reject all the Catechisms because they’re not infallible? I guess we can’t follow the examples of the saints because they’re not infallible either, and those who wrote their lives aren’t infallible! Well, let’s just excuse ourselves more shall we?

A true child of the Church is obedient and submits its own judgement to that of another, even if it were not ex cathedra. A humble man prefers even the opinions of one more holy and enlightened than he.

You give the demons delight. A priest was already quoted saying bare arms can cause mortal sin. I suppose it was a pious exaggeration? Come on. The people here who take this so lightly, may God have mercy on you. And if you think promoting the standards of the Church is aggressive, then you better take all the saints and Popes who did so along with that accusation of yours, if you would be consistent. Lord have mercy on us.

The quote from the priest said — bare arms.  No one is promoting bare arms, which are immodest.

But if a shirt reaches within a few inches of the elbow, then I don’t see a problem.  That’s not what the priest is taking about.

Most shirts today have very short sleeves.  Barely covering the shoulders.  That’s wrong.

There is a reason the Church said below elbows.
