I made my first communion standing in 1966, by that time about half the mass was said in English and facing the people about half the time. They perpetrated the NO gradually in the Detroit area.
Seems like it was only shortly after that the handshake was introduced along with EMs and CITH (Communion in the hand). I remember the EM timing (1966-67) because my Godmother was the first female EM and she was very proud of that, but my parents were aghast and I remember a pretty ferocious argument on that account between my parents and her and her husband, I think that they both thought my parents were jealous of her lol. Anyway, that was the last time I remember seeing my Godmother and her family - prior to that, they were closer to us than some of our relatives - and this type of scene played out dozens of times over the years till we basically had no more friends or relatives, they all went NO.
By 1968 we stopped going to diocesan churches, by the end of 1968, the Mass was already gone from the diocesan Churches in our area.
