  • It is Church teaching that anyone (whether baptized, unbaptized, Christian, pagan, atheist, etc.) can validly baptize, so long as they proper words are used and the baptizer has the intention to do what the Church does.

Given this, is it possible to baptize oneself?

  • No.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Denzinger 413, I believe.

ETA: Yes, Denz. 413, from the Decretals of Gregory, letter from Bishop of Metz.  Ibid., for BoD, incidentally.

  • No.  It's the same as a priest cannot absolve himself.

It appears that that would be baptism of desire.

  • May wanna brush up on "distinctions without differences" just in case.

Nice when you decide not to say something, and someone else says it anyway.

    Ty, really.

We do not self administer teh sacraments to ourselves. We receive the sacraments. In the case of baptism someone needs to pour the water and say the words with the intentionof doing what the Church intends.

  • I ordained myself yesterday. Today I will consecrate myself a bishop.

  • I was a bit irritated, back in the pre-conversion times, to have briefly "in votoed" myself into a wondrous cassock of a kind, of a material so fine, that only the most elect may see it.

So I figured, "In for a penny; there's nothing else for it."

Ya'll can skip the honorifics… gets a tad tedious and, after all, "WE are Church" and whatnot.

It's the collec… I mean the community, that does everything anyways.

WORKERS! Oops,  I mean ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS UNITE! Bread line... DINGIT!

  • From the Code of Canon Law;

Can.  849 Baptism, the gateway to the sacraments and necessary for salvation by actual reception or at least by desire, is validly conferred only by a washing of true water with the proper form of words. Through baptism men and women are freed from sin, are reborn as children of God, and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated into the Church.

Not entirely true.  A priest may say Mass by himself, and give himself the Eucharist.

May? If he doesn't receive Communion, there is no Mass.
