Scrupulous or mortal sin?
« on: January 16, 2026, 03:24:46 PM »
I recently went to confession and would have to wait another day to go again so I can't ask him for his advice until then but he has said I shouldn't confess more than once a week unless a mortal sin is committed.

This morning I woke up an hour before my alarm and decided to close my eyes to get some extra rest, however before I woke up I was having a dream and right before my dream ended I I saw a beautiful women in said dream. So while I wanted to sleep more I think I was also hoping to see this lady again, and during my extra rest I did dream again, and there was some impurity in said dream. So I am unsure if this was a mortal sin. I might not have been fully awake but I did have some awareness to know that I was dreaming. I am a bit scrupulous about this sort of thing and I was just at confession yesterday so I am embarrassed to go again so soon when I am unsure if it's mortal sin or not.

Can any of the more educated people of this forum help me determine if I committed a mortal sin and if I should immediately go to confession tomorrow or wait another week, I don't like receiving communion when I may have committed a mortal sin as I don't want to receive our Lord unworthily. Thanks.

Not a mortal sin!  The image you “saw” was dream generated. There is a brief period between full sleep and complete wakefulness. Since you fell back asleep so quickly, the residual memory of a dream is not within your control. It’s not as if you got up, relieved yourself, showered, got dressed, said your morning offering, and headed to breakfast, all the while concentrating on the “woman of your dreams” that you might dream of her again later that day or again that night.
Residual dream images sometimes occur when a person enters a brief waking period directly from REM (dreaming) sleep. If you think of the fictional woman again, distract your brain with another task. The devil is tempting you by getting you to worry about this. Another meaning for the word “worry” is to chew or gnaw upon, as in, “The girls peered through the fence slats and saw a large mastiff worrying a thick bone.”
