  • I wouldn't say I was entirely raised Christian but protestant relatives made sure I attended church as long as they knew where i was. They also put their foot down as far as me not doing any sport meets on Sunday. I never viewed it as missing out but just it was a serious thing I could not do, I didn't want to. (I think as a parent now if faced with that - I would feel bad that my child would feel they were missing out- so not as good as my relatives.) After church if we traveled out of the city to see an Aunt or visit my grandma's friend in a nursing home sometimes (maybe 2x a year) we would stop at fast food drive-thru or if it was Mother's Day we went out to eat but we didn't shop or eat out other times. We didn't do field trip type of things at all.

When my son was young someone told me they were going to a museum on Sunday (inviting us) I told them it was Sunday (like it wouldn't be open)  and they were laughing that I thought museums were not open on Sunday. I was shocked that a museum would be open on Sunday and still kind of am.

Now it seems like Catholics view Sunday more as a family fun day? I see everything from birthday parties, festivals, museums, child dance or sport competitions. It's like as long as it's "family" it's OK?  It's like it's lost that family time is usually the result of keeping it, instead it's the new commandment?

  • I don't answer my phone on Sundays because I consider talking to people unneccessary work.

  • I am all for family fun on Sunday as long as attendance at Catholic mass is part of the Sunday itinerary.

You're free to do that, but the prohibition is on unnecessary servile work.

There's nothing servile in picking up a phone.  Unless maybe you don't have hands?
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

It's servile to talk to annoying family.   :jester:

It can go the other way. If you don't answer the phone, it could be you have missed the opportunity to help someone who wants to ask for help.
