 It's not up to him to make her happy. 

He does have a significant responsibility for and effect on her soul. But I have heard of a case where the man was innocent as the woman came to know things that she should not have and reacted wrongly. By that account it sadly appears justice was served, and she is almost certainly in hell for it.
