  • I am of the opinion that women should not breastfeed in public.  It is immodest, and a little bit disgusting.  Please don't say it's not because it is "natural."  It is natural to urinate and have bowel movements, but we don't do that in public either.

What really is inappropriate to me is women who breastfeed during Mass, right in the pew!

  • As long as they're covered, I see nothing wrong with it. My wife covers herself with a blanket.

I agree with this-even during Mass.

And I'm sure you'd be the first one to complain when an infant started crying during Mass because he's hungry.

I don't mind infants crying; they can't help it, and can't be taught yet.  I will admit, however, that toddlers who aren't controlled really do annoy me.

     :stare:

You liken BREASTFEEDING, which is necessary for the survival of the infant--- EATING--- to having a bowel movement or urinating?

Hey, let me ask you something.

Do you go to the bathroom to eat? Do you shut yourself into a room or a closet when you eat?

Well, let's use your logic here.

"I am of the opinion that men should not eat in public. It's nasty, because some of them drool all over themselves, and it's a little bit disgusting. Please don't say it's not because it's "natural." It's natural to urinate and have bowel movements, but we don't do that in public either.

What's really inappropriate to me is when men go up to communion during Mass and eat, right in front of the tabernacle!"

What you're saying is absolutely ridiculous, and if you think what I said is ridiculous, then what you're saying is equally as absurd.

I agree that women who leave themselves exposed make the rest of us who do it modestly look bad, and I hope they cover up during Mass, because it's inappropriate to leave yourself exposed ESPECIALLY during Mass. But that doesn't make it WRONG for every mother to breastfeed in public.

There is nothing wrong, when one is covered up, with breastfeeding.

Should this statue be covered up because it's disgusting that's sitting right inside a Church?

So, it's okay to have a hungry infant crying and disrupting Mass but not okay for the mother to breastfeed him while she's covered up? And before you chime in with, "Well, the mother can take him outside," just remember that then the mother would be missing Mass unnecessarily. Incidentally, do you have children?

  • I mind infants crying and loud toddlers, intentional or not it  lacks of respect for the Mass, parents should not bring children to Mass if they are not quiet but there should be no issue if a woman can nurse during Mass covered or not.  Not all babies will eat with a blanket over them. I don't really see in a situation like Mass where everyone is looking forward in a pew how you would see unless you are sitting next to them.

With intentional or not I meant the parent's intentions.

You know, sometimes I think I should add a new rule to CathInfo:

"Only married persons are allowed to become members."

Or maybe I'd make an exception for single people over 35. :)

...apologies to all the balanced, sane single members of CathInfo.

Sometime I just get sick of the extreme, erroneous viewpoints that some people have -- and usually they're held by the young and/or single.

Tiffany, some of us can't leave our toddlers home. When I travel 4-1/2 hours to Mass, I can't leave them with someone else. I must take them with me. I take them out when they're being noisy or rambunctious, but it's very difficult to handle two of them, and I imagine when I have my next one at Christmas, they're going to be even more difficult to handle.

If I were able to go to daily Mass, I could train them to sit still and be quiet in that environment, but it's impossible for some to make other arrangements without missing Mass themselves.

It's not as if a mother has to cover the baby directly with a blanket over him. She can easily tent the blanket so that the baby barely even notices that the blanket is there. If the mother routinely does this, in church or not, the baby won't even be bothered when he is covered at Mass. This should be the way it's handled, but not uncovered during Mass.

  • There is absolutely nothing disgusting in the act of breastfeeding. It is your own thinking that it is. You are a confused soul.

Mothers who breastfeed know how wonderful it is to be able to feed your infant and have that marvelous connection. It is one of the most enjoyable and tender moments between mother and child. Needless to say, it is what is best for baby as far a nutritional needs go.

As long as you do not have your breast exposed and cover yourself properly when doing it, I see no immodesty in the act of breastfeeding in public.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.
