  • What should one do when he realizes that he made a dangerous promise to God (one that he needs His very grace to fulfill)?

  • Keep the promise if you can. If you can't keep the promise then don't but bring it up the next time you go to confession.

    Keep the promise.  Fear God.

    Deuteronomy 23:21
When thou hast made a vow to the Lord thy God, thou shalt not delay to pay it: because the Lord thy God will require it. And if thou delay, it shall be imputed to thee for a sin.

  • There's a difference between a promise, an oath, and a vow.  The last is most binding.  See a priest for a definitive answer and possible dispensation.  Example, as a Protestant, I promised to read daily from a certain "devotional" book.  Upon becoming Catholic, I "broke" the promise without sin.  It would have been sinful to continue praying from a book that promoted various heresies.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.
