  • Why does the Society of St. Pius X transfer priests after about 5 years?

  • Not always. We've had the same priest at our SSPX location for 8+ years now.

  • That's great. But I asked why.

  • I have heard that is so that the faithful will not get attached to any one priest instead of being attached to the Faith.

I think it is more about not having loyalty to any one priest in case that priest disagrees with the SSPX leadership, but that is just a guess.

  • One of our priests is being transferred, but he is trying to resist the transfer.

I find it a help to get used to priests because then you know what their wisdoms are and how to act according to them. If he leaves, then the only person who talks to me after mass is gone.

  • Average stay over the years is 18 months.  Longest was  four years, shortest, now with the Resistance, a little shy of three months.  He converted a few politically incorrect families.

  • But the traditional practice was that priests stay in their parishes, because like a father shouldn't leave his family, a priest should not leave his flock. :scratchchin:

  • The SSPX used to have a policy of never leaving a priest in place more than 2-3 years, how often that is enforced waxes and wanes. A few times they have left a priest in place 5,8 even 10 years and the results have not been good. I understand how the transfer of a beloved priest can be hard for both priest and parishioners but when a 'cult of personality' arises around a single priest it is not a good thing. I have seen this happen personally, a parish will become more attached to a particular priest than they are to the Faith itself. The priest's word and opinion becomes  gospel instead of him being a messenger of the Gospel. Even a good and humble priest can become proud and vain in a situation where he is put on a pedastal. This is also why priests must live in a priory and not out on their own.

This is true only for diocesan priests.  Religious priests have always been routinely transferred from place to place.

  • I do not know if this applies to SSPX or the context I read it in.

But I recall reading that an order intentionally sends its priests so South or Central America to prevent them from "jumping ship".

I attended a "booming" NO Church in Sacramento where the priest was very charismatic and loved. The parish had the 2nd highest out of 90 for tithing and all masses were packed. The school was strong.

The priest had 8 years to retirement and requested with strong community backing to remain at the parish.

There was an uproar when all this was ignored. They replaced him with a priest who told us he could not wait to retire and started his tenure by going to the bishop every week and begging for a transfer.

Less than a decade later the school went under, the parish is bankrupt- even the KOC is broke. The new priest went on a stress leave and was eventually transferred to hospital chaplaincy.

  • I know of a priest that comes to   2  small SSPX   chapel twice a month.  He has been assigned there for 5 years.  The people there have suffered so much from this priest.  He's finally being transferred!

  • If there are wolves, people should call them out. And not post unsubstantiated crap anonymously.
