  • What works for you?

  • For some reason the beginning of my post doesn't show. I'm allowed to try to modify it, then given a message that I "can't modify just any post" when submitting it.

    Add this to the above:

Who has a set daily schedule similar to what a religious congregation uses? How do you plan out your day and to what extent? Without some kind of schedule that has specific times to do certain things it is easy or a person's day to get off balance. Modern people, of course, just does whatever they feel like and have many distractions leading them into useless wasting of time. Without having enough of the day planned, how can we come anywhere close to practicing the perfection we are called to?

  • 6.00 rise and join my husband to say morning prayer together.
6.30 breakfast, clean up, make herbal tea,
7.00 jump on computer to see what's happened on CI. check his writing, while he goes for walk
8.00 make bed and tidy up, get dressed, food preparations

11.30 lunch, then rest or garden, odd jobs, maybe sleep

4.00 evening prayer, prepare meal. wash up, say Rosary
6.00 settle down to share a movie together
8.00 shut down movie finished or not
8.30 he to bed, me back to ipad for reading

9.00 me to bed to read till sleepy, then sleep till 6.00

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

This is similar to my schedule.
I set my alarm an hour early but often wake up before the alarm, then asap upon waking I make the sign of the cross and tell Jesus I love Him, then I begin my morning with praying my Morning Offering which includes many personal intentions that I insert on my own, then I pray 15 decades of the rosary.
At bed time I fall asleep listening to sermons or chants I have on my phone. Usually I set the timer on the app for 1 hour but rarely ever make it the whole hour, sometimes I set it for longer when I am not so tired.

I am pretty sure it is of no benefit hearing sermons like that when already asleep, but I figure if I'm gonna brainwash myself with anything, then I want to do it with good Catholic sermons.

  • I could do something like this when I was a bachelor.

After I got married, and especially after my son was born, I am not the owner of my time anymore.

God bless you if you can organize your day as you wish. Use your time wisely for spiritual growth.

Being married or single has little to do with having some sort of a regular schedule.
Surely you can make a morning offering as you throw your legs out of the bed. And a prayer of thanksgiving, or a reflection on your day, before going to bed.

Don’t you say a Rosary, or at least 3 Hail Marys, with your wife on a regular basis.

Gosh, how demanding is that one child? What happens when/if you have more children? Isn’t a regular prayer life essential to the married state?

Sure, I do what I see as a good amount of prayer, but during the course of the day, I cannot expect to have a regular schedule.

About the other questions, I would rather not say anything, because I would take the risk of exposing the faults of other people.

  • The inability to have a regular schedule is not good.  From a purely physical perspective, it quickly leads to poor health, physically and mentally, not to mention spiritually.

  • I see that several posters seem to be praying all day.
Wonder where they get the time to post on CI?

    See 1 Thessalonians 5:17-19.

    Quote
Pray without ceasing. In all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all. Extinguish not the spirit.

It only takes a few seconds to pray. Try it. It'll do you good.

  • Is there not a difference between living life in an attitude of prayer, meaning, being always conscious of God’s presence as one goes about one’s duties, and engaging in a scheduled period of prayer, devoted solely to that purpose?
Obviously, some activities are more conducive to maintaining an attitude of prayer than others.  Physically repetitive work, for example, is amenable to keeping the mind focused on spiritual matters, whereas work that requires one to maintain constant mental focus is less so.  People come in all varieties, those whose temperaments and souls tend to either mode of prayer or anywhere in between.  (Alas, another “spectrum!”)
And thank God!  We think of holy priests, saints who couldn’t finish Mass because they levitated in a state of ecstasy, all wonderful, but if you’re an air traffic controller, that’s not good unless you can suspend the planes with you!  Other saints no less holy spent their days in corporal works of mercy, serving others or in solitary physical labor that demanded their complete focus. They depended upon those scheduled prayer times and upon the prayers of others, cloistered nuns, for example, to hold them up.  So let’s not criticize or call one another into doubt.
Most people need a daily balance of scheduled prayer time and times in which a prayerful, “pray without ceasing” mindset is present.
Both count as “prayer time” if prayer is truly taking place.
Personally, I’d like to hope that someone writing about me on CI is in an attitude of prayer.  If you are of the temperament that finds mental multitasking difficult or impossible, at least save and reread your post before hitting send!
Can one post on CI and be in prayer?  Why not?  Maybe Matthew should make it a requirement!  There’d be fewer posts that turn to uncharitable arguments, name-calling, or gossip.

    That's what recreation is for.
