  • Why pray for personal intentions?

If God knows our hearts, our future, and what is best for us then what need is there to pray for private intentions?

If things don't go our way, then we say "oh, it must not be God's will", but if things go our way, then we say "God has heard our prayer!".

It is like a silly game and a waste of time. It seems just an emotional act of talking to oneself.

I am, of course, strictly referring about personal prayer for private intentions. Not prayers for adoration, holiness, or increase in virtue, but things like: "God, help me move somewhere else, or help me find a job, etc etc".

  • "Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you."

Now it does take humility to pray, that is true, and I suppose that could be a serious obstacle for some...

Precisely because I am humble, I think there is no reason to bother God with my personal little problems.

In my complete nothingness, why should I ask for anything at all? How is that actually serving God as a servant or a slave as I am supposed to?

What I need to do is to die to MYSELF, so Christ can come and live within me. If I am praying for MYSELF, that means I am not dead to SELF. I am still a selfish little creature with personal "all about me" interests.

Thanks for bothering us with your personal little problem!

You crave input, but you don't have the patience to wait for Him to answer. Yes, He knows what you need before you ask it, but He still wants us to make an act of will and present our petitions. Ask your guardian angel to present it for you if you think you aren't doing it right! How is it that you are effortlessly creating a nihilistic hole of misery for yourself and the rest of us by bragging about how self-negating you are. The goal is self-denial. There is a big difference. It means doing all things for the love of God, not primarily out of hatred for one's self. Cutting off your ability to pray for your own needs is cruel, unusual and counter productive. Be absolutely selfish when it comes to your time with God and always go to Him and His saints (esp. His mother!) first.

Thanks for bothering us with your personal little problem!

Since apparently I don't know how to pray for myself, I was hoping someone could direct me on how to pray for personal intentions, like actual Church teaching, a book recommendation or a specific method or something....but I wanted to know the WHY first.

I'm only getting emotional responses here though, and accused of lack of humility and bragging about self-denial! I didn't intend to come across that way, but sorry if I did.

This actually makes sense. It's a good idea, thanks!.

Bragging about your self-negation. Read it again. Nice bait and switch though, you ask for an unqualified opinion from an anonymous forum and when the you don't like the response you get, call them emotional and insist on official Church teaching only.

It's not emotional to call you out on a contradiction!

Glad you found part of my answer helpful, but your self-loathing is spilling out to everyone else.

This sounds like something an athiest might say.
