• Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Cantate Domino, 1441:

Therefore, it commands all who glory in the name of Christian, at whatever time, before or after baptism, to cease entirely from circuмcision, since, whether or not one places hope in it, it cannot be observed at all without the loss of eternal salvation.

According to these words even medical circuмcision (which places no hope for salvation in the practice) results in loss of eternal salvation. Thoughts?

• Nevermind, I found a video by MHFM which explains it well. The context is practice of the old law.
So a heretic or judaizer could still practice circuмcision as a religious ritual without necessarily placing salvific hope in it. Such a practice results in loss of salvation, but a medical operation which physically has the same effects as a ritual circuмcision does not fall under it.

• a medical operation
Circuмcision is mutilation, not a medical operation. Posthetomy (removal of foreskin) is a medical operation.

If that's the case, then why's he say
Quote from: Eugenio IV
whether or not one places hope in it
?

• Be careful when reading primary source docuмents.  It is very easy for those not trained to misunderstand them and form incorrect ideas.
