That's true, and in fact in general Fundamentalist Protestants are more conservative and less apostatised than what I've seen of "Traditional Catholicism".

What if the son was ignorant about masturbation being a sin? Punishing ignorance is the best way to alienate a child and encourage more sinful behavior. But if it's a repeat offense corporal punishment is both prudent and justified.

I don't know what fundamentalists you've been hanging out with but the ones I know are quite hypocritical and are quite open to change when they feel like it as is the case in a religion with no rules or basis in reality.

If someone claims to be a Trad Cath and does not act like it then they are not. Saying otherwise is like saying all Americans are gαy because a few support them.

I don't think this is a case for corporal punishment.

The boy really needs to understand, really process in his mind, that this action is a mortal sin, which offends God and kills his soul, and will make him go to Hell. Then he needs to be consecrated to Our Lady. Without God's Grace the habit will probably go on.

If he's the reading type, maybe leave a good pre-V2 catechism around which mentions masturbation being a sin. Maybe have him read it, or have dad point it out to him. He might be surprised, you never know.

I'm positively sure at age 13 he knows it's a sin, in fact, even atheists know at that age it is unnatural and disgusting shameful practice.

If you do not discipline him swiftly and severely next thing you know you're gonna find him a few years down the road in some seedy motel with 3 pinoy "ladyboys" shooting up the cocaine.
