You don't go to either one.  One day this young person may come up to you and say, why were you not there and you will be able to answer. Or better yet these adults may ask you why you did not show.  Are you ready to answer?  Jesus is not present.

When I was this age, my unitarian aunt asked me if she would be saved, for she and my uncle did many good things for people. I did not answer her, for I knew she was toying with my thoughts.  Nasty.

But it is is you who must put back bone to this and answer.

I rergret going to our grandson's NO First Communion over 28 years ago. His teacher genuflected to the 30 or so plants on the altar, while the Tabernacle was over on a side altar. Lots of old-ladies distributing Holy Communion, lots of immodest dress, lots of loud talking, lots of hand-shaking. Ick.

I would, however, go to the family get-together afterwards, and bring a great trad gift, holy cards, holy water, brown scapular with a booklet, good trad books for the child's age, a statue of St. Michael the Archangel or the child's favorite saint. Building brides is always better than burning them.

Several conflicting answers in this thread.... if you buy them a gift aren't you basically approving the "communion"?

Where there is doubt the answer is simple don't. If I recall correctly any act you think might be a mortal sin and perform anyway without first checking is in itself a mortal sin; you need to be sure its not. Also it's not worth risking your immortal soul because they might be annoyed, just send a gift with traditional literature and a scapular or something at a later date.

Pharasees condemned Jesus for sharing a meal with sinners.
