  • It does seem like this is true.. Wait, it doesn't seem like it... it is

People who follow Jesus are stomped on in society.. seen as "pathologically 'religious'" or whatever.

Blessed are the meek? They will inherit something (the earth)?? I never did u/stand that psg..

they will inherit NOTHING if you ask me, at least not in this life. Maybe they will inherit Heaven but that is not what the psg says.. It seems that people who use intimidation, those who bully, they are the ones who do well in this world.

"no good deed will go unpunished"

that's not in the Bible but we know it is true nonetheless (and we are not sola scriptura folks around here anyway)

also: I am not referring to people who merely call themselves Christian, who sorta go along with society but also go to church and etc... I am talking about those who TRULY follow Jesus, a rare breed if you ask me

  • Is there not a passage in the Book Of The Apocalypse that suggests the Earth would become a part of Heaven post- end times? If that is the case then the good folks get Heaven AND Earth but, the bad shall only have He?l. It sounds like the Just shall have the better deal in the long run!
That passage says we will inherit the Earth/land, it does not say we shall inherit this present temporal world.

Also, another way to look at it is that if you care about the sustenance of life one would cultivate the Earth. Therefor, you would be some sort of farmer, permacultureist, horticulturist, Aquarist or some such, so in that sense the land would be under your charge.  Maybe some one else can give a deeper insight? This probably is not an appropriate interpretation... unless one likes farming?

Lastly, you are wrong. If nice guys finish last then why don't wicked people go to Heaven? Why is the devil in Hell? Why are the Saints in Heaven?

Pardon me for saying this but, you seem very concerned with the short term material return on your good deeds.
Many people say "For the Honor and Glory of God!" but, what they should say is "For the Love, Glory and Honor of God". - Fr. Paul of Moll

Perceptive comment, Student. And this is a sign of protestant thinking.

The Douay Rheims Bible says this:
    Quote
Matthew 5 [4] Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.

    and

Ecclesiastus 10 [17] God hath overturned the thrones of proud princes, and hath set up the meek in their stead.

Nevertheless Jesus' promise that we would be "stomped on" is good for a while yet. He means what He says and He keeps His promises. It's what we should expect if we are living a truly Christian life.

    So why complain?
    And why post this anonymously?
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

This reminds me of a modern pop song I have heard people playing...

The title is exactly the same as the heading of this thread "Nice guys finish last..."

Not a very Catholic song at all...

     :scratchchin:

    That being said...

The first shall be last and the last shall be first...  Thus, those who are have 1st place in the esteem of the world shall have the last place in heaven.  And those who have the last place in the eyes of the world, shall have the 1st place in heave.

It is better to be in the last seat at a banquet rather than take the first seat and be kicked off from the table completely... ;-)

It is very hard to remember this kind of thing when you see  that "nice guys" aka christians (Catholics) are not "getting ahead" and some... well, whatever. se la vie

Jesus did say we would be hated by the world

Then you need to reorder your value system along more Catholic lines - more prayer/spiritual reading  in lieu of of TV news.

Yes, it is hard at first.  But, it is ever so worth it in the end!  :-)

I was inspired my meeting a good traditional Catholic man to convert to traditional Catholicism.  So, I know well the impact that a good man can have.  Believe me.  It is worth it to be a "nice guy" even if you are not Catholic.  For, even the world respects a decent man.  Yes, he might not be the sort of person who leads in everything because he cares more for people than honor.  Yet, I will tell you that a true gentleman is treasure by all of those whom he lives around.  :-)

oh please. I hve been accused of praying "too much"

i hate presumption. It sounds so arrogant.

I will admit that "getting ahead" was NOT exactly what i meant.. no idea why i used that terminlogy. What i meant is you can't even get by, much less ahead, in most places in the world, if you love Jesus "too much"

I think that the idea is that a person cannot serve two masters: God and the world.  We have to pick one or the other...

If we persevere in following God aright, we will be persecuted in this world but be given everlasting life as our reward.

Yet, if we follow the world, we may receive rewards on earth, but most likely eternal punishment...

I for myself like Saint Joan of Arc's motto: "God first served."

Keep fighting the good fight and do not give up because you are looked down upon by those living in the world...  :-)

thanks for not sounding judgmental, like some here
dont know exactly what God first served means, except to point out that God sent Jesus?
anyway, yeh, i never said i envied those who are "ahead"... although of course anyone who says he or she never envies what people have is a liar and lying is just as much a sin as envying..
anyway... yeh, Jesus said we will be hated by all... ALL
as in: those in our church also (meaning the RCC; there is only ONE Church)
    :)

Don't worry!  It is hard to grasp all of the truths of the Faith and spiritual life even after years of study...  None of us here are saints.  At least as far as I know of...   ;D
Saying "God first served" means that everything we do should be done for God, through God, and as God would wish it done.   :)
Yep!  The fight for the Truth and the Faith is definitely not easy, but as is written in the Bible, "He who persevereth unto the end shall be saved."  The battle for our souls is absolutely worth the struggles of this life!
In over-zealousness some of us may seem a bit harsh at times, but when push comes to shove we are here for you if you ever need anything!
    God bless!   :)

    excerpt from
Homily of Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, at the beatification of Louis and Zélie Martin, Lisieux, World Day of Missions, October 19, 2008.

    “God, the first served!”
For the Martin spouses, “that which is Caesar’s and that which is God’s” was very clear. There was no hesitation with putting God first in their life. “My Lord God, first served” was the emblem of Joan of Arc, and the Martins made it the emblem of their home. It is remarkable to see how this couple always submitted themselves to the divine will. In their home, God was always the first served. When a trial touched their hearth, their spontaneous reaction was always the acceptance of the divine will. When Madame Martin said, as she often did, “God is Master, He does what He wants,” Monsieur Martin echoed her in saying: “God, first served.” They served God in serving the poor, neither as an outpouring of generosity, nor as social justice, but simply because the poor are Jesus. To serve the poor is to serve Jesus, or, giving to God what is God’s: “whatever you did for one of these least brothers or sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:34-40).

This is simply not true. I know many people who do not envy others but who are perfectly content with what they have, and these people are not wealthy, merely wise. Not everyone has the same sins.
