  • For a long time I figured that I would not have a TLM within travel range of me.  Today, however, I grabbed a local community newsletter and discovered that what sounds like an independent parish is opening up two exits up the highway from where I live.  The article even contacted the NO diocese, which sounded like it got caught off guard by the announcement.

What should I know about independent parishes?

  • Some independent chapels are very bad, some are good.
If you don't want to give the chapel's name, who's the priest?
If you feel comfortable with giving the chapel's name, that would be better tho.
Before going, you need to really check it out first.

  • If the dioceses advertised it, it's got to be bad!

  • The parish is St. Vincent Ferrer in Griswold, CT.  It's a mission church of Sacred Heart in Lawrence, MA that was active in the 80s until the priest died.  No priest was named, but there is a brother speaking for the parish and I guess there will be a priest coming by for Sunday Mass.

I DID NOT SAY THAT THE LOCAL NO DIOCESE ENDORSED THE PARISH, just that it sounded like the diocese was surprised that they reestablished themselves in their territory when the newspaper contacted them for information.  The article provided information about the diocesan TLM and Ecclesia Dei priest.

  • I bet that was an eye opener for the dioceses!  the dioceses thought they had that parish out only to resurrect!  Fantastic!  Here in Phx AZ when Bishop Olmsted came on, his first item on his agenda were to visit the traditional churches to oust them, to be rid of them, in the nicest way that he could.  All of the traditionals pretty much smiled and showed him the screen door.  Fr. Porcopio one of the traditional priest, knows communism when he sees it!  Independent need to be watched for cultish ways. That is sad.

  • Based on the information you provide and some basic research on the internet, it is apparent that this chapel will provide valid sacraments.

One traditional priest I know of gave the following advice to a friend of mine when the family had to relocate to another State.  He told him that just because a chapel says its a traditional Catholic chapel, doesn't mean that it really is.  He advised the family to attend the chapel for about six months and just listen to the sermons and watch everything.  If, after six months, every sermon is orthodox, the liturgies are orthodox and according to what appears (to the layman) to be correct, and nothing seems untoward, then the chapel is most likely truly a Catholic chapel.

I would give the same advice.
