Heal the past’: first Native American confirmed to oversee national parks

The confirmation of Charles F Sams III marks a symbolic moment for many Indigenous communities

  • Changes will be made.  Will you be able to go to these parks in the future?   Will they be kept in their natural state.

  • I can't find any articles on the internet which describe Mr. Sam's views on anything at all. He's from the Umatilla reservation in eastern Oregon.

I did find a partial article that I can't link to that says that a memorial Mass and Rosary were held for Sam's father in 2019, at St. Andrew's mission church in Pendleton, Oregon; so Sam's father was likely Catholic (Novus Ordo), so maybe Charles F. Sams lll is at least baptized Catholic, in the new rite. Not sure that that means anything though.

  • A little bit of history on the founding of the Catholic mission on the Umatilla reservation, beginning in the 1840's:
