Need housing, again!

  • Please pray I find another place to live.  This is the second time in six months I've had to move due to my building being sold and made into condos.  I cannot afford to stay in even cheap motels this time round, so if I'm not successful by Dec. 15, I'll have no choice but to live in my car, not very safe for a 60ish woman in NYC.  Also, not good from health standpoint, but still safer, healthier than the shelter system.

Have you thought about getting in your car and driving away from NYC?  NYC is so incredibly expensive.  You could find much better accommodations for a fraction of the cost in PA, OH, MI and most of the Midwest.

I would if I could!  I have three things keeping me here.  Mom, age 94, Dad, age 89, Both in need of my help. A secure job which I would not be able to get at my age elsewhere.

  • Can't you move and bring your mother and father with you?  I would pray and explore this possibility.

  • Why not move in with them, your parents, assuming they have a roof over their heads.

That's a good idea. Unless the parents are in a nursing home. However, if they have their own home, then living with them would be the most practical solution. It may be unpleasant to live with one's parents, but not as unpleasant as living in one's car in New York during the winter.

If they need you to take care of them, they don't get to stay in a super expensive city where you aren't able/qualified to get a job that has a salary premium due to "being in New York".

Some professions pay more in the big cities, so the higher cost of living is cancelled out. And some jobs are centralized in certain cities (tech jobs in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Austin, etc. or the finance or publishing industries in New York City). But if you're not taking full advantage (career wise) of being in New York, you would probably do well to work that same job somewhere else, where you'll get paid 20% less but the cost of living is only 50% or even 30% of what you're paying right now!

For example, are you aware that in most smaller cities, an apartment costs $300 - $600 a month?

And if you work an unskilled job, your paycheck won't keep up as well with the cost of living. You might have to explain this to your parents, and strongly suggest they move somewhere cheaper to live.

  • No, my parents are not willing to move. All of their friends, activities, doctors, etc. are in NY where they've lived their entire lives.  Their house is paid for.  I cannot live with them full time because it is 90 miles one way to work in commuter traffic.  I stay with them from Friday 8:30 pm and depart at 4:15 on Monday morning.  My work hours are from 7:15 to either 5:45 or 6:15.  Needless to say, by 6:15 Monday evening, I am exhausted.  My job is a special needs teacher of 5-7 year old children.  I get one 30 minute break and one 15 minute break.  I often have school related work to do after the children leave.  Needless to say, I simply cannot (physically) commute from my parents' home!  I'm looking for basic accomodations, a room with bathroom, plus space for my bed, folding table, standing wardrobe, microwave and hot plate.  Because I'm not there on weekends and holidays, a full apartment is not necessary, but I do need a quiet place where I can have privacy.  I'm past the age of sharing a bathroom with a bunch of total strangers, many of whom could be deviants!  A tiny studio or unfurnished room with sink and toilet is what I have now, but cannot stay!
Once my parents have passed, then will be the time to escape NYC!  For that, I already have plans.

  • Parents aged 94 and 89 do not readily or easily relocate. In fact relocation could well be a severe trauma to folk who've lived in the same place all their lives.

From the time of his death up to the present day, Saint Anthony has been invoked in the most diverse needs, and these prayers are answered in a most remarkable manner. Countless miracles have occurred through St. Anthony's intercession, so that he is known as the Wonder-Worker.

I have never had St Anthony fais if I ask him to find me something I've lost. I'm sure he'll find you a place. God bless you.

I know Catholic Charities is the absolute worst, but they say on the website they are there to help find affordable housing to those who are evicted. It's worth a shot. I'll be praying for you.

  • Yes, this sounds like a tough situation, but God will reward your charity and things will work out!  The biggest problem is that you're probably limited in jobs, because you teach.  Can you change careers and get a job that let's you work remotely (i.e. login from a computer...this type of job is becoming more mainstream)?  (I know that could be a crazy thought, just trying to "think outside the box").  Could you build a "tiny home" in your parents backyard?  Could you get a job close to where your parents live?  If they can't move, then staying closer to them is the only solution.
