Modesty and Exercise
« on: May 07, 2026, 10:44:21 AM »
I have heard and read some traditional Catholics speaking of exercises not being permitted due to the immodest postures assumed.

However, I have misalignment and tightness in my whole pelvic region that is causing serious problems. There are exercises and stretches that can be done to fix this, but because of the region I have problems in, it certainly does not look modest.

I do not understand the mindset of those who are against that, because there are other things in life we must do that involve "immodest" postures, like washing ourselves, women giving birth, etc.

So my question is essentially is there a way that these exercises would be morally permissible since it is for a lawful purpose? I am also wondering generally about weight lifting that involves potentially immodest postures such as squatting, lunges, etc. I have health issues that weight lifting has been proven to help, and so I am not interested in doing it for vanity.

I have wondered about this myself.  I do exercises that if I had a choice, wouldn’t participate in but I do so for health reasons (healing diastasis recti and organ prolapse from birthing children).

If you are doing it in private or only with other ladies, then it is fine. When in doubt, ask a wise Traditional Priest.

Thank you. What is the moral principle behind your response?
