Modest attire for men
« on: Yesterday at 09:48:57 PM »
Standards for modest attire in females has already been posted but I can't find much on attire for men. In general what rules should men follow in-order to dress modestly? Also when doing physical labour or sports do these standards change? e.g men wearing short shorts during spots is quite common in the modern world.

Anonymous forum so ladies can comfortably post if any sort of attire they find 'dangerous'. (So men know what to avoid).

Thank you for giving women the opportunity to give their input anonymously. As a woman, I personally find it distracting when men wear short sleeves, especially if their arms are muscular. The same goes for anything that is tight-fitting, thin material, and shorts as well. Men who show their chest from unbuttoning a shirt gross me out, it looks like they’re trying to show their manliness in a lustful way. It seems like the appropriate thing to do in that regard, is to wear an undershirt if a dress-shirt is to be unbuttoned.

This article addresses the history and purpose of shorts for men, with links to other articles that speak of similar issues.

A word of caution, this website often uses pictures to portray ideas better, and they sometimes display immodest pictures for that end (teaching purposes), so keep that in mind.

I think the ideal for daily wear is at least a polo shirt and some nice pants with a belt. Sweatpants and shorts, I would not say they are a sin against modesty (being inherently masculine articles of clothing due to being pants or pants-like, so one does not sin against their sex by wearing them). But they are very imprudent because they do not reflect or express authentic masculine gentlemanly behavior. Shorts are for boys, and have generally always been viewed that way throughout history.

T-shirts and sneakers are more tolerable, though still not the ideal (there are nicer shoes that are neither dress shoes nor sneakers/tennis shoes). I personally have little nicer clothing in comparison to t-shirts because I was not raised Traditional and clothing is expensive now. I am also more rough on clothes and so I don’t wear my polo shirts or nice pants every day. I have enough jeans to get by without wearing sweatpants. Also, men should comb their hair, not leave it disheveled (having naturally curly hair is not immodest, but keep it under control), and nice hats (not baseball caps, those I don’t have a problem with  wearing those occasionally) are always welcome, but not required.

Obviously tight fitting is bad. Don’t wear tight jeans or other such clothing. I do not have a problem with short sleeved shirts for daily weekday wear, provided that they are not too short. One should wear a dress shirt for Mass if they can, not short sleeves.

These are just my personal positions and opinions about male modesty. Obviously, every man and boy has a different wardrobe and is only able to accommodate what they can. I know that thrift stores and places like Good Will have cheaper polos, and I plan to get some more shirts when I have some money to spend.

Short sleeves as in mid bicep? Or less than that? In what ways do you find it distracting? How tight is tight fitting as well? Example, a regular workout shirt might get tight around the chest when doing a workout to the point that the shape of the chest is visibly defined through the shirt yet without a workout it's loose enough that it's not shaped.

Thin material, do you mean stuff that contours against the body? Or shirts that can be transparent like a white shirt? I find thin is quite useful in hot humid weather. As for shorts how short? Below the knee? Above?

When you say unbuttoning a shirt, is this more than just the neck button? I typically do not button the top most button if I do not wear a tie, it looks off to me.
