Minimum Amount of Daily Prayer?
« on: August 01, 2022, 10:37:26 AM »
I am curious as to what the minimum amount of daily prayer would be necessary to not be a mortal sin? I can’t seem to find any resources on this topic.

Would going to Mass on Sunday and saying a few Ave’s before bed be okay, as I neglected to say my Rosary that day?

You are not obligated to say the Rosary. As long as you say at least the Pater and Ave once a day. You're still praying.

I would try to at least pray 5 decades on the rosary each day and a morning offering and at least a few short prayers before bed. All this combined would probably be about 25 minutes worth. I'd also recommend 10 minutes of mental prayer a day. Mental prayer is very important.

Don't worry you didn't commit a mortal sin. Just try to pray more from now on.

One of the capital sins is Sloth, which primarily means laziness in prayer and whatever other religious obligations you have, then secondarily it means laziness in work that should be done. So when it comes to praying, do not be lazy. It really is the simplest thing we can do in this life.

There have been days in the past when I was SO sick that I couldn't manage to pray the rosary...

Thankfully, now that I am married my husband helps me get through the rosary even if I am sick and tired and if I can't talk he says the whole thing out loud so I can follow along as best as I can while trying not to pass out. 🥰

Anyhow...  Before that when very sick I would make an act of contrition silently and say seven hail Mary's in honor of the seven sorrow of Our Lady when I couldn't manage the rosary.  Any sort of lifting up of one's mind and heart to God is praying.  So, just do your best and add what you can when you can even if it is only a little prayer like "Jesus Mary, Joseph" (indulgence of 7 years and 7 quarantines).

I remember reading that Saint Christopher after he converted asked a monk for advice as what to do because he was not able to pray.  And the monk gave him the work of charity to carry pilgrims across a river.

So, even if not through words, we can pray through actions if we offer them to God and for God. 😇
