  • Men’s Use of Testosterone “Abuse,” Women’s use of Estrogen a Right
    by W.F. PRICE on JUNE 5, 2013
Recent reports on the growing use of testosterone supplementation by middle-aged and older men have suggested that it’s a problem we ought to worry about, because most men “don’t need it.”

    From the NY Times:

The number of middle-aged men with prescriptions for testosterone is climbing rapidly, raising concerns that increasing numbers of men are abusing the powerful hormone to boost their libidos and feel younger, researchers reported on Monday.

Testosterone replacement therapy is approved specifically for the treatment of abnormally low testosterone levels, a condition called hypogonadism. The hormone helps build muscle, reduce body fat and improve sex drive. But a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that many men who get prescriptions for the hormone have no evidence of a deficiency at all.

The new study is the largest of testosterone prescribing patterns to date, involving nearly 11 million men who were tracked through a large health insurer. The report showed that the number of older and middle-aged men prescribed the hormone has tripled since 2001.

Men in their 40s represent the fastest-growing group of users. About half of men prescribed testosterone had a diagnosis of hypogonadism, and roughly 40 percent had erectile or sɛҳuąƖ dysfunction. One third had a diagnosis of fatigue.

The medical group that sets clinical guidelines for testosterone replacement therapy, the Endocrine Society, recommends treatment only in men who have unequivocally low testosterone levels. That finding requires a blood test. But the new report found that a quarter of men did not have their levels tested before they received the hormone. It was also unclear what proportion of men who did undergo testing actually had results showing a deficiency.

Not long ago, there was a trend of women using estrogen during and following menopause, and while this was later found to contribute to some health risks, not once were women accused of “abusing” the female hormone. In fact, use of estrogen was widely praised and recommended in all sorts of media outlets.

But now that we have older men doing the equivalent, it constitutes a problem. This is because masculine characteristics, in our culture, are seen as inherently problematic, whether they be men’s sɛҳuąƖ preferences, personality characteristics or work habits. Testosterone is seen as a culprit in many of these masculine behaviors and proclivities, so it’s bad, right?

Estrogen, in the meanwhile, is a wonderful unicorns ‘n rainbows magic elixir that bestows nothing but good on earth, so women can pop as much as it as they want, and under Obamacare we all have to pay for it!

Another issue is this matter of health risks. While having teens and young men use testosterone on a widespread basis is probably unnecessary and may have harmful long-term effects (such as testicular problems and permanent hormonal imbalances), mature men, you’d think, can make up their own minds about what to put in their bodies. Even if it does have attendant health risks, is that a reason to limit these men’s choices? If a man decides that it really improves quality of life, is it our business if he incurs some risk by taking a medication?

I’ve never tried testosterone, but if I felt that I wanted to at some point I think that option ought to be available without exposing me to suspicion of “abuse.” If men’s hormones are to be highly restricted and and only given to men who are determined to “need” them, then the same should apply to female hormones. How many of the tens of millions of women on estrogen actually need it? Perhaps they could be considered to be abusing the hormone.

In short, this is a matter of discrimination against men, and there’s no reason middle-aged men should be scrutinized when they seek out prescriptions for androgenic hormones. Sure, doctors should tell them about the risks, and can refuse to prescribe it if the patient would be endangered, but in most cases the decision should be left up to the men themselves, just as women have the choice of taking their own synthetic equivalents on their own initiative.

And finally, it’s amazing that the Times has the chutzpah to cast aspersions on ordinary men’s use of T when it so happily endorses “gender reassignment” procedures for men, which require enormous doses of hormones in addition to risky surgery.

  • I'm certainly not advocating androgen supplementation, I don't know anything about it.  I just think the blogger makes an excellent point:

these degenerates promote "trans-sɛҳuąƖism" and all matter of hormonal modification of women while trying to mark older men taking supplements as drug abusers.

  • Sex is for making babies.  If men and women are trying to use it for all sorts of other things, then it isn't surprising they often end up with "dysfunctions."  I think the cure for that is better morals;  not popping pills.

I put this in the same league as drugs like viagra:  an idiotic waste of time.

In regards to "fatigue," I think that modern life is stressful, but the way to deal with it is not to take speed or downers, "energy pills," lots of coffee or whatever.  I think the way to deal with stress is first and foremost prayer, then exercise, learning to relax, deciding what's really important, sticking to priorities, ect, but not popping pills.

Again, I put this in the same league as drugs like zoloft or wellbutrin:  an idiotic waste of time.

And then, there's the side effects, the money, trips to the pharmacy and all the doctor's appointments!

  • When the little blue pill came out, men were making their way to the ER's.  Oh, my heart is throbbing!  And the first question is, "did you take the little blue pill?"  Let me see your tongue, did it turn blue.

Years ago, I read an ad for viagra, and as I was reading it to myself, a began to laugh out loud, and this was on my job in the lounge.  Well, they wanted to know what was so funny.  I showed them the ad and I laughed saying, " it says here, not to eat any happy meals!"  Well they said, no way, let me see.  It stated to eat no cheeseburgers and fries when taking the pill.

One of the problems with men is the number one birth control, vasectomies.  Chances are good that men will have problems later and doctors who do the procedure know this and won't have it done to themselves.

As for the women, how many have hysterectomies and how many do not need it. Some get a hysterectomy from the beginning of tubes tied that goes to cysts that hurt to hysterectomy.  The magic, says the doctor is estrogen, man made.

Both men and women, who may have these procedures have 4 times the chances for cancer down the road.

It is very sad when damage is done, when it is not your fault, and still sad when you decide on the damage, and you wish you would have not.

Women can use Evening in Prime Rose oil or maybe estrogen cream.  I prefer the first one, always.  Men can take supplements and feel better, but that is for    those who have had no surgeries.  Once the damage is done, it can cause hormonal imbalance and vitamins a supplements don't work as well.

This is about hormone replacement, not about sex.  Is it really that hard to understand what even the topic of the discussion is?

  • Turning towards the issue of feminism, which is one of the most serious threats to Tradition.

And yes, they always resort to attacking the messenger.

The OP is making a very simple point:

Being feminized, taking estrogen, is OK to the establishment.

Being more male, taking testosterone, is considered problematic.

That's just bologna!  The "establisment" wants to put every man, woman and child on pills from the first day of their lives, to the last!  Don't give me this men are discriminated against by drug company advertising.  What a laugh!

  • This thread is a cheap corporate attempt to mobilize men's outrage at being abused by the cultural revolution's mobilization of women's envy, in the so called, "women's liberation movement."

  • No, it has nothing to do with promoting the use of androgens.

Isn't it utterly bizarre to have a society where football players have pink ribbons marked on their helmets, a society where "women's medical issues" are relentlessly promoted in the media and the press, where so-called "transɛҳuąƖism" is promoted?  Where you anyone who used to watch TV was bombarded with hormone replacement therapy commercials?

Meanwhile, the NYT is worried that some older men may be getting too much benefit from androgen supplementation.

It's about a campaign to feminize.

The author makes a good point:

These people are upset if a man supplements his natural hormones, but for years beat the drum of HRT for women and now increasingly show vocal support for men becoming "women." - that is INSANE.

  • People are living longer and working longer. They therefore have discretionary income for longer and whenever something moves, someone tries to profit from it. That's all there is to this.

It could be hormone pills, herbal remedies, older men's fashion. It's all just business and all the original posting shows is that people are suckers. Is this topic really a proper foundation to discuss the issue of feminism (yes it's a serious problem, ok?), or is it just that some people need to discuss the topic at every turn.

A good question to ask is what does Catholicism teach men about growing old? Is it moral to medicate men to give them youthful vigor in their old age? I argue it's a worthwhile therapy for some, especially if it gives them more independence in the day to day.

On the one hand, I agree with you.  On the other hand, I think the outrage you are expressing, real and just as it is, is just being misused by the article to push pills that men shouldn't be taking!

Feminism is mass exploitation of women and men (just look at the results:  women no longer are having children and they can no longer depend on men to take care of them, because the men have been enslaved by their passions, by "liberating" women from modesty and men's wages have been gutted, by doubling the workforce, by putting women to work).  Arguing that men should be "equally exploited," as this article seems to suggest, seems to me to miss the point.

So, it does seem like a cheap attempt to exploit the "men's movement," in order to sell men more pills, that they shouldn't be taking anyway.
