  • I am kinda new to Tradition. It may sound crazy, but I must have been absent at school when Mass Cards were explained. I know you can buy them at the chapel- but how exactly are they used? For what purposes? What is the etiquette? Who gets the card? Mass Cards 101 for Dummies, anyone, please?

That seems rather arbitrary and nonsensical.

Mass cards are usually for someone who has died.

You write the deceased's name in the card, and write that it is from you, and get the priest to sign it.

Give the priest a stipend, and a note with the name of the deceased, for him to put in his diary,

Give the card to a relative of the deceased.

  • If not the Mass Cards described above, it may be that the Mass cards to which you refer are those used by new servers assisting at Mass.  Here is the content from the Mass card that I used

    ...Tradition/Mass/Server/Instructions

For the new servers, I also provided some audio for help with pronunciation

    ...Tradition/Mass/Server/Practice

As for myself, when I used the Mass card while serving, I would try to keep it hidden up my sleeve during Mass, and reference it in the most indiscreet manner possible.

  •  I am the OP- So, I buy the card, then have the priest sign it, and give the priest a separate envelope with a stipend and  a note with  the name of the person I wish to have Mass said for, then send the signed Mass card to the person it is intended for? Is that right?

Can Masses be offered for conversion of a certain person, or for their health or private intentions etc?

    Or only for the dead?

Majority of  chapels  and even no ask for $10 dollars.

Now they are starting to ask people on fixed incomes for 15 dollar minimum.

I have seen them offered for the conversion of a certain person, their health, other reasons etc...

Yes, they can be offered for all kinds of things. You don't need to send people a Mass card, just giving the priest a stipend and a note will suffice, and you can tell the person you're having Mass said for if you wish.

    Wow.  :stare:

Ever heard of inflation? It's not new around these parts, but it's getting more suffocating as the days go by.

Let's see. How much is one gallon of gasoline? Around here, it's $3.44(and the obligatory 9/10 of a cent.)  How much did a gallon of gasoline cost in 1928? 25 cents. And that's when the quarters were made of SILVER.

Hmm, how much does a silver quarter go for right now? Let's see here..

    http://www.coinflation.com/coins/1916-1930-Silver-Standing-Liberty-Quarter-Value.html

$3.75. So you see, the $5 you're complaining about is not being arbitrarily taken by the priest that will offer a priceless Holy Mass for you, it's been stolen by the Federal Reserve with their printing money like it's toilet paper.

    Give these priests a break.

    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

My Avatar is Fr. Hector Bolduc. He was a faithful parish priest in De Pere, WI,

When Father Rostand was in Canada 4 or 5 years ago he set Mass stipends at $20.00 across Canada.  Gregorian Masses (30 Masses in a row) for a departed soul is $800.00 (Yup that's $26.66 per Mass)

  • Let's be careful not to falsely accuse priests of simony. I've requested Mass before without paying.

Quite obviously, it is objectively too much money for a Mass card, or, something like that.
