From someone who has been through it, this is what worked for me. I was rarely depressed because I was determined to stay happy and positive so I could be productive.
1) You MUST be grateful to God for the blessings you DO have. For example, you have the faith, the greatest treasure of all. And you have family who will help you. So start each day giving thanks to Him, and meditate on the good things in your life. You'll have a smile on your face before you jump out of bed.
2) Pray. If you don't already have a diligent prayer life, start now. Formal prayer and quiet reflection.
3) Avoid people, places, cultural things that depress or cause envy. That most definitely includes most media.
4) I really really like this website for lists of tips for productivity, positive mentality, etc. There are a lot of common sense reminders and suggestions that are extremely easy and motivating. Ignore any pagan references of course, but most of it is very helpful. You can subscribe to their daily email and start your day with a bang.
