While I agree that it would be closer to the ideal of spiritual health for the author to own his remarks, he may just not be at that point yet. I'd guess that someone harmed him or violated his trust, whether in reality or appearance or a mixture of the two, as outlined within the OP. For good or ill, this is how he is handling it.
All such speculation aside, there is some unquestionably-sagacious advice for all of us in the simple saying, "Look in the mirror."
I cannot and need not answer for anyone else, nor will anyone else answer for me. However messy my life is or may be, it is what it is precisely because I have acted out of disordered self-love, offending God and harming myself and others in the process.
