  • Is it wise to buy life insurance for a growing traditional family of 6?

If so, can someone recommend a life insurance policy?

    Thank you

  • Your best bet is to find an independent insurance agent who can advise you on the best options for your family. If you need to find one, pm me with your state or post it here.

  • I have it, but only for $700,000 in the event of death.  Premiums are about 500 per year which given I am driving around a lot, seems like a reasonable risk mitigation strategy given dangers of the roads. My extended family could and would chip in and help I am sure, if I did not have it, but why bother them?

It would not be a total safety net, but it would keep the wolf from the door.

  • I think so, yes.

When I joined the Knights of Columbus over a year ago, I was able to get some pretty good life insurance.  I think life insurance is the main purpose of LoC, in fact.

    What is the monthly payment?

The premium for *any* life insurance carrier, including the Knights, will depend on age and health conditions (height/weight, etc).

The Knights' advantage is they don't make a profit, so the premiums go towards paying the member benefits.

Also, they cover a lot of people that would *never* get covered by a 'regular' insurance company.

Lastly, Knights policies are 'convertable'. So you can get term life and convert some or all over time to 'whole' or 'permanent' insurance -- often if it is convertable there would be *no* re-underwriting (health physical all over again, etc)

I have a family, thus I have life insurance. Not enough, but I have some.

Indeed.  Whatever one may think of the Knights today and their affiliation with the NO Church, their original purpose was to provide for the material needs of the widows and orphans of deceased Knights.  Today, like it or not, the most effective way of doing this is through life insurance.

  • It's better to go to an independent agent-  some are appointed with fraternal benefit societies. So many things vary as far as your needs & which company offers best product & price for you.

    No, it's not.

And no one's needs 'vary' for life insurance, it is about the cost of the insurance premium relative to the level of coverage. Period.

And an independent agent *is not* the way to get that.

Shop around, *yourself* then find an agent that brokers the carrier you end up wanting.

The Knights, as we have pointed out, will cover you when you cannot get covered by nearly anyone else (due to medical), and they cover unborn children, etc.

Their products are convertible, so you can obtain permanent aka 'whole' or 'universal' life insurance later when/if you have extra money to invest, without going through underwriting (which, when you are 10, 15, or 20 years older you may have a much worse health rating)
