It's better to go to an independent agent- some are appointed with fraternal benefit societies. So many things vary as far as your needs & which company offers best product & price for you.

And no one's needs 'vary' for life insurance, it is about the cost of the insurance premium relative to the level of coverage. Period.
And an independent agent *is not* the way to get that.
Shop around, *yourself* then find an agent that brokers the carrier you end up wanting.
The Knights, as we have pointed out, will cover you when you cannot get covered by nearly anyone else (due to medical), and they cover unborn children, etc.
Their products are convertible, so you can obtain permanent aka 'whole' or 'universal' life insurance later when/if you have extra money to invest, without going through underwriting (which, when you are 10, 15, or 20 years older you may have a much worse health rating)
