  • Do Americans get a dispensation to eat meat on 4th of July when it falls on a Fri? This is a serious question. We had planned a BBQ.

  • Why? Is the 4th July a Catholic feast day?

In the USA, there is a longstanding dispensation for the consumption of flesh meat on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday in November), otherwise, at least before the age of refrigeration, leftover turkey and such would have been wasted;   and for corned beef (or whatever) on March 17th (St. Patrick's Day) if it falls on Friday.

But those are the only two of which I've ever heard.  I have never heard of any such thing for Independence Day when it falls on Friday.

Incidentally, I have noticed that on Friday, whenever I smell barbecue or meat cooking, it is ALWAYS very alluring.  Meat cooking always smells better on Friday, than it does any other day.  It seems to me that this is a natural phenomenon due to our fallen nature and our susceptibility to temptations from the devil.  As such, non-Catholics would fall under the same inclination, but not practicing the penances of the Church, would likely succuмb to the temptation, and might therefore PREFER to have such cook-outs on Friday than on other days.

Incidentally, while for them who do not believe, the sin may be somewhat mitigated in God's infinite mercy, but it does not change the fact that eating flesh meat on Friday is an objective sin, regardless of WHO does it!  For it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff (ex-cathedra).

That's actually not a bad idea.  "Throw another shrimp on the barbie!"

  • Why on earth would there be a dispensation from fasting in celebration of an unjust Masonic revolution against a legitimate (albeit heretical) monarch?

Brilliant!  Not to mention, look at the results and the spread of evil around the world that has occured since.
Traditional Catholics SHOULD know the history of the US.  However, culturally it is a day off for most, and a chance to gather with family and friends, but we should do so as Catholics.  There's a reason americanism is a heresy.
Shrimp on the barbie sounds good!

You are over-thinking it.  Meat is more alluring to you are Fridays because you know you can't have it.  It's like that with anything; the moment you can't have something is the moment you want it the most.

We must also remember that eating meat on a Friday is only sinful because it is a mandatory penance required of us by the Church.  It's not as if there is something objectively evil about eating meat on a Friday, or that it violates natural law.

  • CMRI said that in the USA, since the 4th of July lands on a Friday, we are allowed to have meat.  I was a little shocked and I feel the same way about the Friday after Thanksgiving.  We can always save the meat for the Saturday or freeze.  I really don't mind having a meatless day; we all need to do that.  I love Salmon on a cedar plank with dill sauce, oh, yum!  I love shrimp and Lobster!

No dispensation for St Elizabeth of Portugal!
I should have asked: American Independence Day is a Catholic feast day?

All due respect to CMRI but they have no right to set the laws.
