  • Hi,

I'm just curious , as God did not form the IVF baby in the womb- do they have a guardian angel ??

as they weren't destined by God, but put together by science

. I even heard on the news they made a baby using three eggs or something? Would God give them a guardian angel or would they have a soul .

They say at conception a little light appears in our womb in normal pregnancy, in sure that's the soul.

    Hmmmm

Everybody who is conceived, has an immortal soul infused into the conceived entity at some point, a point which the Church has never defined.  Since we don't know when that precise instant "is", we must err on the side of caution, and assume that the soul is infused at conception, even though that might be true, or it might not be true.  It's the same basic idea as "be sure of your target and what is behind it" --- if a person is in your line of fire, "I didn't see him" doesn't bring him back.

Many "conservative Novus Ordo" types, those who view the CCC catechism as "the one big encyclical that answers all questions" (which is not true), "the only book you need, besides the Bible", read the English translation, see the word "immediately", and think that means ensoulment takes place at the moment of conception, pronto, right now, not a second later.  Even if that is true --- and it may be --- that is not what "immediately" means in that context, it means "by the direct action of God without mediation by the parents".  Contemporary speakers of American English don't normally use the word "immediately" in that more Latinate context, hence the confusion.  But be prepared for a conniption fit, though, if you dare to tell them that "immediately doesn't mean 'right that very second' ".  It doesn't take much, to send some of them into a tantrum --- "but the Catechism says...".  Some of them are pretty unbalanced people.

As for guardian angels, all of us have at least one.  (It's not impossible that some of us could have more, God is not limited.)  I don't know if that is de fide or not, but it is commonly accepted teaching.  In whatever perverse, unnatural manner a new life is created --- now that we have the science smarts to do it --- the soul is infused, and guardian angels are "assigned", just as they would be for a naturally conceived person.  God surely will not penalize the innocent child for his parents having pursued "better living through chemistry".

Never heard the "little light" business before.  Can't say yea or nay, but it sounds a little "precious" to me.  No way to know, and it really doesn't matter.

Possibly, but what does that have to do with this discussion?  I know I am bad to ramble "off topic" from time to time, but this is a non sequitur.

That was me.  I have no need to be anonymous in this discussion.

This has nothing to do with the question at hand.
