  • In the confessional the priest admonishes you and stating you must attend every Sunday NewMass at your local diocesan Church, while your confessional priest and his monastery has walled itself off and resisted their local diocesan bishop. Double standard here? Should I follow and obey my confessional priest?

  • This priest isn't "resistance".  Any so-called priest who orders you to go to the Novus Ordo is Satan's minion.

I don't understand. Why would he order me to attend a novus ordo but he and his are not in communion with the bishop? This is irrational and makes no sense. Just don't get it.

  • We just might need to know who would say such a thing. You are not bound by the seal of confession.

I feel so uncomfortable bringing the name to the forum. Or the city. I am in a real pickle here.

  • Can a Catholic ask to speak to the priest about his penance (after the fact)?  It seems to me HE is the one you need to ask these questions.

I am the original OP and after careful consideration it is imperative to warn others of the name of this "Church". I learned of it from The Traditional Catholic Directory which states they are Independent and drove two hours for confession and attend the Traditional Latin Mass today. During my confession
I admitted to not attending any of the churches in my locale because they all adhere to the teachings of Vatican II and it's destruction of the Traditional Catholic Church and her teachings. He was quite adamant expressing I must attend every Sunday at one of these churches in my locale.  Needless to say I disagreed and will not return to that Abbey.

The name of it is Syon Abbey in Cooper Hill, VA

  • That's insane. Being independent, probably sedevacantist, but telling penitents to attend their local Novus Ordo?

And why do you bring the Resistance into it? I know Resistance is "your average Traditional Catholic" and this group is also claiming to be Traditional Catholic. But "Resistance" means something very specific: the group that continued in the path (or position) set out by Archbishop Lefebvre, breaking off from the SSPX and continuing the original SSPX mission after the Neo-SSPX under Bishop Fellay started chasing after Modernist Rome with Pope Francis at the helm.

+ABL would be spinning in his grave if he weren't enjoying the Beatific Vision.

The Resistance is basically the SSPX if it had never compromised and become "The FSSP Part 2". You might call it "old school SSPX" the way Traditional Catholics are "old school Catholics".

Earlier in the week when I called to set up a confession and asking if he was canonical he advised me they were not. Also stating "We don't revolt, we resist." Thanks for the clarification. He also stated their priests all have been properly ordained.

Yes, there is the generic term "resistance" as in "resisting the Pope" or "resisting the errors of Vatican II". Pretty much any Traditional group does this.

But it does sound like this group is giving some serious mixed signals, not to say contradictions.

  • It doesn’t matter what label is put in the priest.  The answer is simple.  Get a new confessor!

I see that this Abbey is also listed in the Lux Vera Directory which is typically on the mark.  I reported this to them. Unfortunately, I had to say it was anonymous complaint.

I find it very hard to believe that any true independent priest would tell someone to go to the NO ever let alone every Sunday.  It makes me wonder what the real status is of this Abbey. I wonder if things have changed.

You might also report this to Traditio (and Lux Vera) since you can put your name to it.  I see they have a smiley face for this location.  I also noticed the priest name on the Traditio directory is different than the ones listed in Lux Vera's.
