I myself don't think your interest in this is what St. Paul warned against when he listed the things that should never be mentioned among Christians. I'm pretty sure he meant that the idea of murdering anyone should never be mentioned, rather than the idea of why someone else murdered.
But I can imagine it being an unhealthy interest in some people. There are books that would scandalize some people, but edify others, like for example, any of Fr. Malachi Martin's books.
It would be good to pray for guidance, and offer mortifications in petition for knowledge of God's will about this. You might make a resolution to ask for guidance for a certain period of time at the end of which you'll decide one way or another based on the counsel you've received. That way you can rest assured you did something concrete, so to speak, to make sure you're not going against God's will.
