Is Reading True Crime Stories a Sin?

  • Is there any justification for reading about a crime that was committed, not in the newspaper, but in a paperback novel detailing the people involved, their lives, their relationships and subsequently the murder, the investigation, arrest and trial?

Are these the types of things that "should not even be named among you" as St. Paul says? I'm not a police investigator or have any other particular reason to learn about this story.  But I am interested in it because it involved what seemed to outsiders to be a "godly Christian couple" with a wife who taught other wives how to be ideal spouses to their husbands.

I can't help but wonder what on earth she did wrong that brought this rage and hatred upon her by the killer.

Is this what St. Thomas Aquinas refers to as 'curiositas' ?

  • I hope you can ask a good priest.

I myself don't think your interest in this is what St. Paul warned against when he listed the things that should never be mentioned among Christians.  I'm pretty sure he meant that the idea of murdering anyone should never be mentioned, rather than the idea of why someone else murdered.

But I can imagine it being an unhealthy interest in some people.  There are books that would scandalize some people, but edify others, like for example, any of Fr. Malachi Martin's books.

It would be good to pray for guidance, and offer mortifications in petition for knowledge of God's will about this.  You might make a resolution to ask for guidance for a certain period of time at the end of which you'll decide one way or another based on the counsel you've received.  That way you can rest assured you did something concrete, so to speak, to make sure you're not going against God's will.

What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?

  • No. We should avoid this kind of reading.  Leave the world to read books about our Catholic Faith and saints.

There is no Church teaching which prohibits us from reading anything except spiritual books.

  • When it put our souls in danger we should avoid it.
We shouldn't waste time on worldly trash and sin.

If a book is sinful, absolutely we should absolutely reject it.  If a book is morally neutral, however, the Church does not require us to reject it simply because it is secular.
