  • I have observed the meatless Fridays for years now.  Should I also refrain from beer on Fridays?

  • If you want to make an additional sacrifice, go ahead.

    But beer is not meat.

You're confusing abstinence with fasting. When fasting, you never drink any alcohol. Maybe because you can't feast and fast at the same time? I never asked why, but the minute you're fasting, it's zero alcoholic beverages.

  • Alcoholic beverages have never been forbidden by the law of the Church in days of fast or of abstinence.

  • When Pope Paul VI issued his decree modifying the rule allowing meat on Friday, He did not issue a blanket abolition regarding the rule. The modification allowed a substitution of another penance. Some examples have generally been to attend mass, say the rosary, make the stations of the cross etc... However in your case, if you like beer, then maybe that would be a good substitution.

  • The monks drank beer/wine during the lenten fast.  Probably still do.
