  • Hello everyone, I know this may be a silly question but I’ve had something on my mind recently. I was hanging out with a friend and I used the nword as a joke. My friend became uncomfortable with me the rest of the day then told me the nword is a sin and that I should talk to a priest and go to confession. Is it a sin? I’ve stayed awake a few nights thinking about it. What do you guys think?

  • Interesting theological question. Depends. Was your friend black or white? Do you have the pass from someone who is black? So many nuances to this question. Hopefully Leo XIV writes an encyclical clearing this one up.
    Pray for me

  • Nice joke, but NO it's not even a sin. Even though the world considers it ONE OF THE LAST SERIOUS SINS, they blaspheme Our Lord's holy Name left and right, but they refuse to say "nigger" even as part of a QUOTE.

That's how I am about blasphemy -- I won't use blasphemous phrases as quotes, lyrics, let alone from myself.
But God is my God!  Do people literally worship black people? What the heck?

If I have to deal with blasphemy all over movies, youtube videos, etc. those blacks are going to have to stop being so fragile and deal with hearing "nigger" from the lips of white people.

Obviously it could be a sin of contumely (in-your-face expressions of hatred against a person), hatred, inciting someone to anger, etc. -- but as conservatives often remind you when discussing "hate crimes": "Those things are already against the law".

You don't need a special "sin" for saying "nigger". Unless saying the phrase breaks  some OTHER EXISTING commandment, it's not a sin.

    Negro = black
Hence it was used as a term for black man.
It doesn't take much imagination to see how "negro" became "nigger" in common slang.

Oh, and might I remind you -- they refer to THEMSELVES with this word, the same way we call someone "dude" or "man". Like 5 times per minute.
So it can't bother them too much.

As for "latent multi-generational PTSD" -- their great-great-great-great-grandfather was called "nigger" as a term of hatred and derision on the plantation, and now it bothers them when they hear it -- just "get out of here". Not even worthy of a response.
Modern day blacks have no memory of being a slave, not even if they talked to their 110 year old grandfather. You have to realize how long ago 1865 was...

Great post. Worst of all might be the whiggers who listen to hip hop, but wouldn't even be able say "nigga" (not even nigger) when it's invariably in the lyrics.

I term them "linguistic cucks", it's literally what they are! The blacks took a word that white people invented, claimed it as their own, and now these white boys can only listen to it..not say it. Pathetic!

No it's not a sin, unless you say it around people and cause them to commit sins. So if you call a black a nigger you will have scandlised him by causing him to sin.

How do you figure is causes him to sin?
To scandlise anyone is to shock or cause horror and that's not a sin.

  • I don’t know. I’m Irish and my grandmother used to call me a nigger turned inside out. I never took it too bad haha I had to remind her once in a while she married one. 🤷‍♂️☘️ :fryingpan: I’ve had a lot of black friends living in Dorchester and it all depends on the context whether it bothers them or not. Obviously If some honkey is getting aggressive with them they will take it more personally than If your joking around. Some of them have a chip on their shoulder but not all of them for sure. Think about it….. if your racist they are going to sense your a jerk. If you love them they can tell. Imagine that 😵‍💫😆. They can also tell if you’re just a virtue signaling looser and those people get no respect in the hood! I wouldn’t go shouting it at the black people here in Tennessee because they all look pretty tough and will take no bull! I wouldn’t go shouting it at 2am in the hood either. We do have to have some respect that they were treated awful in America. Protestants were the driving force behind the slavery here and used the Bible to justify it. They also have the black communities trapped in it. Faith alone does not work! This is part of the major issues we see with black families not sticking together and going out to the clubs and listening to rap while wearing crosses. Protestism is the reason this country wears a cross and does a lot of evil things. We have not done enough to bring them the Catholic faith. I do think we have to acknowledge their grievances more and do more to help them come back into the Catholic community. Calling them niggers is probably not a good place to start. Racism comes out of the heart and out of the mouth the overflow of the heart will speak. Have you told a black person you love them lately? And if we pretend prejudice doesn’t exist we’re lying to ourselves. Living in Boston taught me that the crooked leftist that claim to be social justice warriors are deep down the most racist people there is and literally live in all white neighborhoods with blm signs in front of their homes. They would call the “evil” cops in a second if they seen him coming down their street at night. I think this is a good discussion to have. I do think blacks have been exploited here for sure. The Catholic faith is the answer.

  • Another important point --

We shouldn't use the word "racism" because what does that word even mean?

It's useless to utter the word unless you're going to take the time to define it. It's a buzzword, a loaded term that the Media has crafted. It's far too malleable and nebulous to be useful.

I would refuse to answer a question like "Are you racist?" because I have no idea what they mean by that.

If they mean "Are you proud to be white?" then yes. If they mean "Do you want your children to marry other whites?" then yes. If they mean, "Do you especially enjoy the company of your own race?" then yes. If they mean "Do you prefer living in societies built by whites/your own race?" then yes.
But I strongly disagree that ANY of those are bad things.

If they mean "Do you hate this or that people group?" then no. If they mean, "Do you advocate and/or practice various rudeness, crimes, harassment, etc. against other races" then no.
    Et cetera.

I think we should be kind to black people, they are God's children too. But we must be realistic (for example, being cautious in various situations -- not placing yourself in dangerous situations for the sake of woke delusions)
And I would still prefer that all of my children marry within their race (assuming they marry). That is very politically incorrect to say in these woke, Communist times, but I don't care. It's natural and human to prefer your own kind. Water seeks its own level. Birds of a feather flock together.
Miscegenation brings a set of problems and challenges I have no experience dealing with, so I would rather not have to deal with them.
I think a lot of people vastly UNDERestimate just how different many races are -- and about some very fundamental things. Marriage is already challenging enough; why dial up the difficulty to "nightmare" mode?

If you want to foster some kind of harmonious one world melting pot -- I would advise just make lots of friends, business associates, and acquaintances of various races. But for intimate, permanent relations like marriage -- I'd say stick to your own culture and/or race, for best results.

Of course not all races are equal, and not all races are equally different from each other. Some "combos" work better than others. It's a combination of culture, and physical/temperament differences. There are physical differences between the races, which goes beyond upbringing or culture. But culture is probably the #1 biggest factor.
But you have to realize there are issues with children of mixed-race marriages -- they have a hard time identifying with either parent's race. Again, not something my kids have had to deal with, something I've never dealt with myself. So I'd prefer to keep it that way.

  • Ask where that person goes to Mass and I bet its somewhere ultimately insulting to our Lord.

So I think they should work on that before worrying about offending overly sensitive modern people.

  • Growing up around Detroit, nigger was just a word describing blacks, like pollacks = Polish people, spicks = Mexican people etc., nothing to it really. When you used it as an insult, you dragged it out a bit like; "nig..ger" or "stupid nig..ger." But that was then, nowadays, Matthew said it.

  • If you take the word/slang, "Nigger", and subtract a letter "g", you have Niger. Niger is a country in Africa ! 😃
