I am a Trad who assists at the SSPX.  I was invited to a wedding on a Friday night.  Since I observe the Friday Fast at all times of the year but would like to enjoy whatever the main course is at the reception.  So, should I seek dispensation from my SSPX priest?  Or should I just follow the novus ordo standards and pray a complete Rosay or such penance as that?  Or should I stick to the meatless items?

  • If it were me, I'd stick to the meatless items.
I considered this scenario recently when invited to a Friday wedding, but didn't end up attending at all due to distance and time of day.

Just take everything except the meat, or you could leave it on your plate.

What's the big deal? You say you are a Trad, but are you Catholic? If you are, then act as a Catholic.

  • Getting married on a Friday sounds very practical for a number of reasons, including cost and ferial day.

That being said, I'd go. Every wedding I've been to had meatless options. And most will, anyway.

  • I am the OP.  The wedding is novus ordo with a married deacon "presiding" over the nuptials. So, I should just forget about asking for a dispensation and eat the meatless items?

  • If a deacon is presiding (no need for inverted commas), there can't be a NO Mass and that's probably better.

Why would you consider asking for a dispensation if you are a Catholic? Can you not go without meat? Why not give a quiet witness?

  • While it has become customary to get married on a Saturday, there is no prohibition to getting married on a Friday.  Indeed, as has been pointed out above, it may be an economical choice given how expensive things associated with weddings are these days.  There are no prohibitions as to the timing of a marriage in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, except that the solemn nuptial blessing cannot take place during Advent or Lent without special permission of the bishop (although the marriage itself may still occur).

As to eating, almost every wedding I've ever been to has included either a fish or vegetarian option.

  • Go Meatless or wrap it up and save it for lunch next day.

If Marriage is a sacrament, why is a deacon presiding?
Where is the priest? At gαy bar?

Yes, you should pray the Rosary during the Mass.

Abstaining from meat on Fridays is meant to be penitential. Lucky you! For you have the opportunity to make it even more penitential than the average catholic by declining a delicious main course at a wedding reception! Take the high road- you'll get more enjoyment out of not eating it in the long run. :)
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

Deacons are part of Holy Orders in the NO, so they can confect the rite of marriage

Whether it be a priest or deacon, traditional or novus ordo, it is the well-established teaching of the Church that the husband and wife themselves confer the sacrament on each other.  The cleric merely witnesses the event, and then blesses the marriage.

Learn something about Church teaching before you spout your mouth off.  The couple confers the Sacrament on each other; the priest/deacon merely witnesses the event for the Church, and then imparts a blessing.

  • I am not sure what all the hoopla is about this.

Last year the 4th of July was on Friday.  Our Novus Ordo friends invited us for a cook out and get together followed by fireworks.  I made a vegetarian chili and brought along nachos with cheese.

This sort of thing happens all the time.

Just don't eat the meat.  :)

When I see a quote like that of the OP "would like to enjoy..." it really clunks in my ears.

At least the OP is honest, but he is honestly broadcasting to the world that he has an inordinate attachment to food.

We shouldn't "seek to enjoy" such base pleasures of the flesh. If your taste buds work, you will certainly experience plenty of pleasure in this life. Especially if you live in the USA, where food is cheap and plentiful, even among the poor. We shouldn't cater to our concupiscence -- we should fight it.

If God sends us some consolations and simple pleasures in this life, then fine. But we shouldn't seek to "enjoy ourselves" and "enjoy life" as much as possible, even at the expense of A) passing up opportunities for penance, or skipping penance altogether and B) even committing venial or mortal sin.

How do you know if you're enjoying food a bit too much, or that you need to practice more mortification in your life?

Well, for starters, if you ever find yourself chafing at something as easy and basic as Friday abstinence from meat...
