  • I feel I am being over charged for my internet connection. I am trying to reduce my monthly bills.

How much are you paying for monthly internet and who is your provider?

I am paying about a hundred with home phone line included. Comcast.

    Thanks

  • Cancel your phone line and get a Magic Jack, then ask if you can do a basic cable bundle with your Internet for a discount. We just had Internet and ran our phone through it via Magic Jack, the cable company, Comcast, told us if we got a basic package our bill would go down ten bucks, and it did. We never use the cable and it has worked out well. So I pay $58-61 a month depending on tax for cable and high speed  Internet.

I have more ideas for you, if there is anything else, just ask  :dancing:

Magic Jack? Does that thing really work? What about call quality, echoing that sort of stuff?

That used to be a big problem years ago when I had Skype.

  • Choices can be quite limited.  For a broadband connection your choices are really limited to:  DSL (phone company); Cable (cable company); Satellite (a few to choose from); and Fiber optic (if it exists in your area).

You can also get a dial-up, but it will severely limit your connection, and what you are able to accomplish online.

Also, if you have a cell phone, there really is no need for a landline telephone.

The newer device is much better, I had an older one and sometimes it would sound like I was underwater. I don't think I've had any trouble or echoes with the new device, the sound quality is good too.

  • We have Magic Jack and love it.  No echos like we had with Vonage.

Yep. I had to call 911 on a smoke detector, so I know.

Don't you need a preexisting Internet connection to use Magic Jack? Here in NYC I know of only two ways to get an Internet connection: (1) through the phone company, Verizon (expensive); (2) through TimeWarner Cable (hyperexpensive).

Since Verizon doesn't market Internet connections independent of phone service, Magic Jack looks like a way to spend twenty bucks for no good purpose!

If I'm wrong, I'd love to know. Saving money is good!!

I've lived in several places, none required us to get phone and Internet together. Yes, MJ requires Internet service and comes to $5 per year for phone. If your plain old high speed Internet is 50-75 bucks a month, and you cut out an additional phone service, you bill can be just the Internet and change for both services.

I don't know Verizon's policies but they could vary in each area.

In order to get DSL from Verizon, they require you to also pay for a telephone landline.  For example, to get their cheapest DSL, which is $19.99 per month, you have to pay an additional $15 per month for a basic landline.  I'm not sure how Verizon FiOS works, however.

  • In NYC the Magic Jack requires a previous hard-wired system.  Unless you do a lot of on-line time from home, it's not worth it.  I don't have a TV or a landline phone, so I use  Verizon Hotspot.  For the amount of data I use, (very little), and because I travel a lot, it is the best for my purposes.  You can adjust the data by the month.  It's still not cheap, however!  Right now, I'm using my employer's WiFi.

  • I use skype for my "land line" per se, and I use road runner highspeed. Tenant (bro) helps me pay for the faster connection, so it defrays the cost a bit. It's really fast.
