  • Is it a sin to be immodestly dressed when no other people are around? I never dress immodestly when I am around people, but often when I am by myself in my room and no one can see me I dress immosestly, like wearing only my underwear and a tee shirt. Is it a sin even though no other people can see you? Do we have to always cover ourselves even when no other people are around because of our guardian angels and also the other angels and demons who are around us and also for God who sees everything and is everywhere?

  • Why are there so many of these topics asking if this or that is a sin?  Are all these off-the-wall questions being asked by people who have no access to priests?

  • I'll take the OP's question further. Is it OK to be naked when you're by yourself, like when you have to take a shower?

I am the OP. A trad woman who used to go to my chapel showered with her clothes on because she did not want to be naked even by herself.

I should say that my question in this thread was partially inspired by a quote I remember by the Cure of Ars where he said we should not be naked for fear of offending our guardian angels. Thinking about this I wondered if it might be a sin and what the Church actually taught about this. Is it really wrong or was the Cure of Ars mistaken?

That is SO stupid in SO many ways.

What, is it possible to turn oneself on? I can look at myself all day and not get the least bit excited. Just for starters, you're always the same sex as yourself. A is always equal to A.

Was it your blinding intellect that caused you to confuse the possessive pronoun "your" with the contraction "you're"?

Why are you not clothed for public appearance?  If it's for purposes of sin, then no, get more clothes on as soon as possible.  If you're showering, performing a task necessary to health and hygiene, going to bed, cleaning out the garage on hot, humid day, being with your spouse, then no, it's not a sin.  Showering fully clothed sounds Puritanical, not Catholic.
Different clothes and degrees of coverage have proper times and places.  Do you sleep in bed fully clothed, with shoes on, as if to go to work?  Probably not.  Do you wear your nightgown to work?  Hopefully not!
Clothing and modesty must be fitted to the occasion.  Suppose you need surgery or a medical exam?  Or are giving birth?  There are times and places where minimal or no clothing is worn.  Agree this question is somewhat bizarre.

  • I don't think the question is that ridiculous. I heard a priest saying in a sermon that we should dress modestly even when we are by ourselves, within reason. Yes, we were created naked, but because of the fall, we naturally feel as though we should cover up. Can anyone seriously tell me that don't have some sort of natural reservation about walking around the house naked? Or very scantily clad?

I agree with a poster who said that it is puritanical to worry about being naked during the shower, though. That seems way over the top. There are times when being naked is appropriate.

  • There's a lot of nonsense floating around about this. Some saints, like St. John Vianney, are justly held to have gone too far, influenced by the puritanical, holier-than-thou ideas of Jansenism, where sin was hiding in almost everything anyone did. The logical conclusion of this is that if you aren't saying Aves while brushing your teeth, you are probably committing a mortal sin of vanity

Obv, if you are in public, or are around family of the opposite sex, normal rules of modesty apply.if you're going to Mass add a little extra beyond just modest, you're going to see the King!  If you're in your bedroom alone or with your spouse, it's ok to wear as little as you wish. If you're in your living room, same deal, if the blinds are drawn.

There's something to be said for cultivating habits of decorum, like not wearing clothes that are too casual, all the time....... but on the other hand we're not all 80 years old, or stuffy noblemen and politicians who have a duty to always be in the public eye. Dress for the occasion. If it calls for a dress or suit, good. If it calls for a robe, or undies or shorts and t shirt, great.

If he did say such a thing, it doesn't make any sense.  Angels are purely spiritual beings with no physical bodies, and no sɛҳuąƖ drive.  Whether an angel sees us clothed or naked makes no difference to them.  Prior to the Fall, Adam and Eve walked around Eden fully naked, along with the angels, and the Lord God Himself.  They were made to wear clothing only after eating the forbidden fruit, because they realized that they were naked, and they were ashamed.

  • Reminds me of a story.

There was a monk.  One of his duties was to sweep his room each morning.
As time passed, the monk remained faithful to his morning duty, but was also seen sweeping his room at other times throughout the day.  Often, the monk would be seen sweeping his room three and four times a day.  Finally, the other monks inquired with the Superior about the frequency that this monk would sweep his room, concerned that it might be inappropriate behavior.  The Superior replied that there is no fault in doing more than what is required.
