  • First off, let me say that I do know that loving God has nothing to do with emotions and "feelings".  It is about doing as He commanded us to do.

I assist at Mass.  I pray.  I meditate.  I pray the Rosary.  I wear the scapular.  I am devoted to Our Blessed Mother and to the Sacred Heart. I read spiritual books.  And so on.

Now I will explain what I meant by my thread title.

    I don't feel like I love God.

Sometimes, for a few moments, I feel something like love for Our Lord or Our Lady.  Once in a very great while, perhaps.  The vast majority of the time, I feel completely and utterly dry.  I feel like this every single time I receive Holy Communion.  This makes me feel very unworthy, and I wonder if I am sinning by some chance for it.  The practice of my Faith is more a fulfillment of a duty than anything else.

My parents were not good people and I never felt loved by them.  I don't feel loved by God either.  He feels very distant.  Even the knowledge that He died for me fails to move my seemingly cold heart.

I crave to be loved and to feel protected and I fear I won't get that, ever.  Am I wrong for feeling this way?

I am a single woman out alone in the world, if that helps my background to become more clear.

If anyone has any advice, I would be grateful to hear it.

  • The life of a single woman is hard. You seem to be doing the best you can at the moment, and God knows exactly what you go through and how you feel. And it seems that you want to love God.

Our experiences do effect how we feel and how we respond to Love when it is offered to us. And God offers Love, is Love.

I am sure you will have people here who will be praying for you in your particular set of circuмstances.

Give yourself time and keep doing what you are doing, and seek spiritual aid from a holy priest. God will answer your prayers in his time and remember that:

God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Cor 10:13)
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • I do not know if this helps.   I am reading St. Francis de Sales "The Art of Loving God".
Basically, it is that God made you for Himself.   Just being conscience of that fact is very peaceful.   No words, no prayers...just the simple fact that He made you is enough.   If you can muster that sense at various times of the day you will get into the habit of contentment.  If you keep TRYING to muster it...that is not what I mean.

You are alive because God loved you and made you full stop.

Another part is...that of course we want to feel that god loves us...but in actual fact that feeling can tempt us to stay there.   It is self-love.  We ALL have it, and it is good to recognise it, not to judge ourselves with, but to move on.  If we judge ourselves and suffer because we have failed ..then that is prideful and self-love.

    He gives this simple advice:

"And even if you do not FEEL such confidence, you must still not fail to make acts of confidence, saying to our Lord, "Although, dear Lord, I have no feeling of confidence in Thee, I know all the same that Thou art my God,  that I am wholly Thine, and that I have no hope but in Thy goodness;  therefore I abandon myself entirely into Thy hands. (This is an act of the will...do not expect to feel anything..Donkath)

"It is always in our power to make these acts;; although there may be difficulty, there is never impossibility.  It is on these occasions and amid these difficulties that we ought to show fidelity to our Lord.  For although we may make these acts without fervor and without satisfaction to ourselves, we must not distress ourselves about that;  our Lord loves them better thus.

"And do not say that you repeat them indeed but only with your lips for if the heart did not will it, the lips would not utter a word.  Having done this, be at peace, and without dwelling at all upon your trouble, speak to our Lord of other things."

You have expressed yourself very well, and humbly in the OP.  You have expressed what we all go through.  You are not alone.  And no doubt those reading  through your OP will include you in the prayers we continually offer for one another.

That is the Mystical Body of Christ at work, so you can offer your thoughts as prayers if you unite them with the rest of us, at the same time visualising that they are being offered to the Father through the Son at Masses being said throughout the world.

  • You need to define what feeling love is.
What would it be to you ?
I am a single man, but I know that my loneliness is not to be
confused with lack of love from God. I'm not saying that's
what you're thinking, but if you can define what feeling love
from God would be, let's start there.

  • Ever since I converted to Catholicism I have had a love for the Blessed Mother. Sometimes I seem to love her more than I love God. Is that strange?

  • If the 'whole world' seems to be 'dumping' on you, its very difficult to 'find' the Love of God, and anyone in Heaven.  Even 'trads' will dump on you, after all, they are only 'human'......its especially tough when it comes from trads.  It would seem 'vulnerability' is highest at when it comes from them.  Your guards are down and it comes as a shock- hard to gather thoughts, which is our first 'defense' but never the less, what they say may seem shocking!  We've come to expect it from 'disbelievers, but trads?  wow, those are toughest!

I don't believe so. Start from where you are. Ask your Mother to give you a special love for Her Son. She will answer that prayer, without doubt, because it is God's Will.

Also when you think about God, think "Sacred Heart of Jesus" or "Heavenly Father" or something of that nature. The words you use will have their effect. And don't expect everything to happen yesterday. Be patient with yourself and less picky. Of course, admit your faults but ask your Mother for help with them.

  • 'She [Blessed Mary] taught them [the Apostles] how to pray mentally, insisting on the excellence and necessity of that kind of prayer; how the principal duty and the most noble occupation of the rational creature was to raise itself, by understanding and the will, above all that is created to the knowledge and love of God; and that no other object or occupation should ever be preferred or should ever interrupt this duty, so as not to deprive the soul of this supreme benefit, the beginning of eternal life and happiness.  She taught them also how to thank the eternal Father for having given us his only Son for our Redeemer and Master, and for the love with which the Lord redeemed us at a cost of his Passion and Death.  She exhorted them to give thanks to God for having singled them out as his Apostles, and his companions and as the founders of his holy Church. . . She exhorted them to persevere in humble prostrations and other actions of worship and reverence in adoring the greatness and majesty of the Most High.'

Ven. Mary of Agreda, Mystical City of God, Vol. IV, 49

    Inspirational Quotes from the Saints

Keep praying and seeking to find the love of God inspired in you, begging God for the gift of the infused virtue of charity. Faith, hope, and love, are virtues you have to have God give you rather than gain through your own efforts directly, though you must make efforts to dispose Him to do so.

'For the rest, brethren, whatsoever is true, whatsoever is modest, whatsoever is just, whatsoever is pure, whatsoever is amiable, whatsoever is gracious, if there is any virtue, if there is any discipline worthy of praise, think on these.'

    Philippians 4:8
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • Padre Pio, and St. John of the Cross, and probably countless other saints, wrote about the dryness that God sends to the soul He wants to advance in holiness.  To new converts He usually gives sense consolations as a reward, but to those more practised in the spiritual life, He must give trials.

As long as you persevere in your practices, be assured that you love Him, and He loves you.

I don't see how anyone could actually love the Virgin Mary more than God, since they seem to be inseparable.  She is by grace all that He is by nature.  I can see how someone could think they loved her more, though.  If someone thinks about her, and prays to her more, then he could imagine that he loves Her more.

But she will not allow you to love Her more than Him.  Your fear that you're neglecting God could be Her leading you to Him.
What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?

  • According to what I've read, this kind of trial may be overcome by applying oneself to learning how to meditate, according to the instruction of some saint, like St. Ignatius, for example.

One very simple and most reasonable instruction of his is that, before we begin to pray, and throughout our prayers, we consider Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of the subject of our meditation or prayer.  I found this simple instruction extremely helpful.
What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?

  • Your very existence is a proof of God's love for you.  He knew you before the world was created and He desired with an unfathomable desire to have you for His own.  He created you.  He nurtured you.  He gave you the faith.  He holds you in His arms at every moment.  He gave you crosses to prove your love for Him.  And He has promised to bring you to Heaven to be with Him forever if you will remain faithful to Him until the end.
