  • Does anyone remember the "tacky" Novus Ordo Church song "And The Father Will Dance?" When I was in the Novus Ordo, they had a lady playing the acoustic guitar (in pure hippie fashion) and we would all be encouraged to sing and dance to "And the father will dance...on the day of joy... he will exult over you and renew by his love."

Another "tacky" Novus Ordo Church song we were made to sing at our First Holy Communion was "Companions On the Journey" and here are some of the lyrics: "we are companions on the journey... breaking bread and sharing life... and in the love we bear is the hope we share... for we believe in the love of our God... we believe in the love of our God"

Has anyone here ever heard of or remember these "tacky" songs?
This was me. Does anyone remember these songs, along with another Novus Ordo song called:  "Let Us Build The City Of God"? Thanks.

  • Although a hymn at the end of mass is nice, I mostly prefer silence.  Then again, that is what I prefer in general.  It's almost impossible to go anywhere without music in the background.

    Alas yes
Da pacem Domine in diebus nostris
    Qui non est alius
    Qui pugnet pro nobis
    Nisi  tu Deus noster

  • I'm not familiar with most of those (I never attended Novus Ordo) but one of them stands out: "Awesome God"

Why throw in that one with all the other crap? Don't get me wrong, it's not suitable for Church (during Mass or otherwise) but as a SONG, one you might play at home while cleaning the house -- what's wrong with it exactly?

I'm thinking of this version in particular:

I can find nothing wrong with the lyrics. Beyond not having any heresy in them, some of the lyrics actually hit pretty hard.
This song actually seems to militate against the "keep God on a leash like a lapdog, to trot out on Sunday" tendency that most moderns are guilty of. It also says that sin is a big deal.

(Forgot to hit the Anonymous box, like so many others... I wish I could fix that.)
With me, I guess it’s not the song in itself.  It’s just that it was sung at nearly every weekly children’s chapel and every Easter/Spring school concert where I worked, three different “non-denominational” Christian schools from 1988/9-2021 when I got fired for refusing the 💉. I can do the motions to it in my sleep.

  • Yes, I have not the fondest memories of Building the City of God, The Father Will Dance, and Companions on the Journey.  My Kindergarten class once sang Companions on the Journey.  It wasn’t until the dress rehearsal for the Easter concert that I realized nearly every last child was singing, “We’re companions on the Journey…baking bread and sharing life…”
