  • Thanks for the responses everyone, they are very helpful. I am a male but grew up as fake Novus ordo catholic so I am not used to saying these prayers in response to others blasphemy.

I have written then down. Hopefully I will be able to make use of them at the appropriate times. I am usually stumped when people use our Lord's name in vain (as I dont expect itl) and by the time I think of a response it's already done
Also how to deal with slang like "geez" or "jeez" etc?

Also again, due to my upbringing I will often have intrusive thoughts about blasphemy of the Holy Name or the name God. I know that thoughts alone aren't sins unless you consent to them but it's very frustrating as I do not want to even have these lest I sin.

  • My husband just makes the Sign of the Cross when he hears Our Lord's name taken in vain. The person then may inquire to why, then a conversation can start.
My spouse and I do the same. It usually causes embarrassment and the offender checks himself

  • Here is G.K. Chesterton's handling of blasphemy as only G.K. could do:

You shouldn’t say “jeez”, Omg etc.  it’s all blasphemous.

  • “jeez”  Oh, you mean Jesus?
    “cripes”  Christ? Mind your mouth.
    “OMG”  Yours, not mine!
    “gosh”  God?  Which one?
“By golly”  May His Name be praised forever!

Sprinkle these responses into your speech in replying to the use of by-words.  Give no lecture, no sermon, just repeat until the person stops.  If he objects to your comments, say, “Yes, isn’t it annoying?”

There is only One God.  Don't encourage further blasphemy.

  • We dress properly and are often apologized to when someone blasphemes in earshot of us, without our saying one word.

  • Is there a difference between blasphemy and using the Lord's name in vain?

Blasphemy is more vocally being "angry" at God and voicing expletives about whatever befell a person, or being angry in general and pulling God into it.

Using the Lord's name in vain is in a similar "vein" but can just be in casual conversation or just inappropriately used but not necessarily meant as an angry affront towards God.  If I remember correctly from Moral Theology, Blasphemy is the more serious of the 2 offences and some Monarchs punished it by branding the tongue with a red hot iron for the first offense, cutting out the tongue for the 2nd offense, and death for the 3rd offense.  Using the Lord's name in vain is also serious and neither should be done if one cares about their souls.

Should we correct others when they do both of these? I.e blaspheme, and using the Lord's name in vain.

I have tried with my co workers before, they have said they try less to do it but not for God's sake but because they don't want to offend me... Of course they still do it without realising it. They are also lukewarm on lgbt filth.

It's like they only believe whatever the propaganda machine tells them.

  • People are just copying what they see online, movies, videos, music, bad parents, influences, etc. and don't think about why they are saying it. It's ironic when they are atheists too. Look at all the movies and see how many blasphemies they have, it's just to normalize them.
