If it's to the point that water is literally dripping into the living room, then the attic must be absolutely soaked and covered in mold/mildew. I wouldn't feel comfortable living there until the hole was addressed and any mold mitigated, up to and including replacing any (likely) waterlogged and ruined studs.

My instinct tells me this is really serious, because unlike a log cabin, a modern home is not designed to dry out quickly after each rain shower or storm. Much less airflow, you have drywall, insulation, lumber everywhere to hold the moisture and grow mold in between storms.
How do people grow to adulthood and have such astounding ignorance in practical matters?

One of the best and cheapest ways to stop leaks anywhere (basement to the roof) is Dap polyurathane, and you can do it yourself.
