The courtship process time starts when the man clearly reveals his interest in the lady and it ends when he proposes to her. That time should be no more than 6 months. After that, comes the wedding preparations, and I've seen brides take over one year to plan everything. I think that maybe you are combining the courtship and the wedding together?

Twenty years sounds about right, so long as the couple is living apart. If the formal engagement lasts more than, say, thirty years, it's OK to question whether your betrothed is truly committed to you and to having a family.

6 - 12 months. Anything more than 12 months is playing with the girl and making her father look silly. Should be able to determine whether or not the girl is Ms Right during those months. Should let her and the father know what your designs are for her. And if it doesn't "work out" then have the fortitude to let her and the father know that it was you, and not her, for the reason of the courtship not working out in the end.

We met and married within less that 3 months. I knew on the day we met that we would marry. But this is rare. We were both mature adults with a lot of life experience. His stipulation, with which I was in agreement, was that our life and marriage would be based on Jesus Christ. 

Still united 39 years later....

I agree.  Mature adults may know their minds sooner--younger people may need a few more months but not longer than a year.  My mom told me that the Catholic Church used to recommend  6-12 months of courtship and less than 6 mos. from the time of engagement to the wedding date.
