  • How long do you fast before receiving Holy Communion? Do you follow the new fast of one hour before Communion? Do you follow the Pope Pius XII fast of three hours before Communion? Or do you follow the older law and fast from midnight?

I try to fast from midnight. I don't eat anything or drink anything except for the medicine I take in the morning and a little water to help me swallow my medicine. The Mass I attend is in the afternoon so fasting from midnight is a real penance.

  • Come now!  Surely this is not a topic about which any traditional Catholic, or even Novus Ordo catholic, needs to hide his identity!!!

Let's all try not to use the Anonymous Forum for such dribble.

I abstain according to the rules of Pope Pius XII, though I don't actually eat any meal prior to Mass.  I have a daily medication that I take each morning and take vitamins with it.

  • There's a 7:30AM Sunday Mass at the Society chapel near where I live, and I'm usually out the door at 6:15 for the rosary, prepping, confession. Etc. So by default, I fast from midnight as it's the first thing I do on Sundays.

    Same here.

For a morning Mass, I'd fast from midnight, but as a coincidence, not as a rule.

Mass for us right now is at 4 PM.

  • I am from the age when even a drop of water was forbidden after midnight prior to receiving Holy Communion.  I still remember being trained to receive our First Holy Communion the nuns would explain that God must come first, which is the reason for the Fast.  Therefore I had a hard time when the fast was relaxed to only 3 hours, and still to this day, I am careful when brushing my teeth not to swallow, and recently had a discussion with a nun, who agreed that when stirring the powdered milk into coffee as an example; we must make sure it is totally dissolved for fear of breaking the fast.

I was shocked to find out that the SSPX chapel in Post Falls, only has a one hour fast as in the novus ordo.  I know this because my grandchildren have gone to Mass there and were surprised to hear of this none fast, since that is what it is being Mass is about an hour long when you consider the time spent to travel there at times.

    Please pray for my soul.

  • I remember when the first Mass at Churches around here started at 5 or 5:30 in the morning and then were spaced out an hour or two apart until 12:30 or 1:00 in the after noon, but these days it's not too uncommon for the only Mass offered to not start until later in the afternoon.

When Mass is late like that, most folks need to eat something 3 or 4 hours before Mass - not a meal, eat just enough to tide them over.

I will tell you why I posted this thread in the anonymous forum. I thought that if one could post anonymous more people would answer. I also thought that if it was anonymous it would avoid pride and embarrasment.

  • It was providential that the communion fast was reduced to 3 hours before the Crisis in the Church (and later, the Crisis in the SSPX) happened -- look at how many people have to attend Mass in the afternoon or even the evening.

We're not in the 1950's anymore, with a wide variety of Masses within driving distance between 5:00 AM and noon.

Going without food and even water from midnight until, say, 4:00 PM or 7:00 PM is not within the reach of most people. The Church would never demand this of Catholics.

When the midnight fast was practiced, the situation in the Church was completely different. Afternoon and evening Masses were forbidden -- and unnecessary -- back then.

Life as a traditional Catholic in 2016 is hard enough. Let's not be like the Pharisees and place additional burdens on Catholics that God didn't intend to impose.

There's a reason why the SSPX recommends the 3 hour fast. Meanwhile, the Novus Ordo 1 hour fast is a joke -- it's not a fast at all. All it means is that you have to stop eating food in your car 15 minutes before you arrive for Mass! You could feel extremely full all throughout the Mass. Another example of the Conciliar Church eliminating penance and mortification from the lives of the Novus Ordo Catholics.

What a GREAT REASON!  I think we should just eliminate ALL of the other sub-forums and just have one great big Anonymous Forum.  That way, when discussing any issue--even such as this, we can avoid pride and embarrassment and everyone will be sure the reply.

Actually, if you read the docuмent of Pius XII that changed the fast to three hours, the reasons you cite above are precisely the reasons he changed the fast.
