I have often wondered about that. The word "priest" is the Old Testament, but it seems Jesus used the word Rabbi... or people used that word in reference to him in the New
confusing
(I've read the Bible but never formally STUDIED it. I also go to Mass as often as possible where i listen intently to scripture, been doing that for many yrs)

The word rabbi means master. It occurs 15 times in the New Testament, (Douay Rheims Bible) i.e., in three of the Gospels (not Luke or in any other NT book). http://www.drbo.org/cgi-bin/s?t=2&q=rabbi&b=drb
A priest is one who offers sacrifice on behalf of others. The word priest appears 71 times in the New Testament (Douay Rheims Bible) : in all Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles to Timothy and to the Hebrews. http://www.drbo.org/cgi-bin/s?t=2&q=priest&b=drb
So the two words are not interchangeable, though they could and do refer at times to the same person.

The priest was one who offered sacrifice for the people. You had to be a descendant of Aaron to be a priest.
To be a rabbi was to be a teacher of the Law. If you knew the scriptures you could be a rabbi. Jesus was called "Rabbi." Under the old law he could not be a priest because he was of the Tribe of Judah.
That is one of the reasons why we refer Jesus as a priest in the Order of Melchizadek because he was not deputed to be a descendant of Aaron. Our priests are referred to as priests in the Order of Melchizadek for the same reason.

thanks, tht was helpful.
that's why protestants are so wrong to go by "bible alone"
I've read the Bible both old and new, but if you do not have the historical context and etc... if you dont know what is allegorical and what is literal... well, u can get lost and even lose interest in the Bible, even start to believe it is not true, not the Word of God.. Jesus established a Church, not a book

actually, Jesus said to the healed ones to show themselves to the priests (so word Priest not only in OT)
So, to Protestants: you have no basis for your belief that Jesus abolished the priesthood (or whatever word u put on it)
those Protestants!
ouch

You cannot read the Bible alone. You should read it within the context in which it was written and explained to us by the Catholic Church.
