  • In a family should the husband and the wife each have their own car? The husband has to work.  The wife has to do chores.   A family with limited means due to a large family may have trouble upkeeping the cars. What do you people think?

  • Times are tough.  Sometimes a large family will need two cars to get to Mass.

If the funds run dry, you can always park one of them.

  • Having had a next door neighbor who was a mother who died in a car crash, I have to say I hate to think of women driving too much.

It wasn't common or traditional for women to drive horses, I suspect.  First because they should be with a guardian, secondly because it was not their nature to lead.

Obviously, sometimes it's necessary for women to drive frequently for distance.  I doubt it's desirable.

My mother has a sort of instinctive fear of high speed driving, and will only drive on city roads, not on freeways or high speed on the highway.

If there isn't a child old enough to watch the little ones, she can always take the children with her and go with him to work, then drive the car to her errands or appointments.

I hate highways too, and I also get dressed out driving on streets or areas I haven't driven on before.

What is "should" I mean if the money is there you can do it, if not you can't?

  • Are you guys serious? Is this really some big dilemma??

We'd better not engage in any activity at all, if there's a risk of dying.

My lawn mower could blow up while I cut the grass!

My oven could start a fire when I bake!

I could get hit by a car when I go for a walk!

    Come on!!

How many people are killed or injured in car accidents versus, say homicide?

Yet it is common for people to avoid dangerous areas.

    Driving is expensive and dangerous.

Car ownership is necessary but it is not always necessary to drive a lot.   And it is good sense to reduce the amount of driving when feasible.

  • When I was a boy (early 80s) our family had one car for years, that my mother would drive.  We'd go to pick up dad from the university when he was working on his PhD.

  • So are you all saying that we should not drive a car? Or women shouldn't drive? Or only have one car?

I mean having two BMWs, I understand that isn't right. But two vehicles per family (one for dad to go to work with and one for mom to run to appointments, for groceries, or get to Mass with), is anything really wrong with that?

As for death: you will go when God calls your soul. Whichever way you die is irrevelant (provided its not self inflicted, of course). We will not be judged on dying by driving.

No one said any of those things.

It's not the most desirable thing for women to be driving all over Creation, that's all.

  • Do trad women drive all over creation??

Trad women I know drive for the reasons cited (maybe to slip in a visit to the thrift store).

Again, what's wrong with that? Sorry, but maybe I'm not understanding this thread?!

Having two cars is a huge expense.  It is the most obvious place to cut money in a budget from.  It is clearly a luxury item.

I don't think the opening post is asking if women should ever drive or not.  Obviously, in the event the wife really needed to have a car that day (because thursdays are the best garage sale days and she goes once a month), she  could ride with her husband to work and bring the car home with her to use and then drive the car to his workplace at his quitting time, put the car in park, move over to the passenger seat and let him drive her home.
