  • From my evening prayers out of my missal

….Let dreams depart, and phantoms fly,
    The offspring of the night……

Ignore the dreams. Also the advice of my priest: ignore dreams

Dittos to this.  Don't even acknowledge your dreams.  Many dreams, even if they startle you to awakening, are hard or impossible to remember after you've been up a few minutes.

We have kind of a ghetto traffic situation on the main drag a couple of blocks from my home, and in case anyone would ever break in, I keep a Smith and Wesson 9mm loaded with hollow points on my nightstand, with only one digit on the trigger lock to move, if I'd have to remove it in a hurry in the dark.  Last night I dreamed I was woken up by someone wandering in the house, and in my dream, when I got up, I was confronted with a very tall, skinny, bald, young light-skinned black man (think Vladimir Duthier on CBS News, he's lighter than many white people, gotta wonder about that first name), and on top of that, butt-naked!  No earthly idea where that came from.  In my dream, I did not have my sidearm, and he sheepishly begged my pardon for intruding.  Then I woke up.  That was a comical dream, though I did wake up with my heart pounding, then I realized it was just a bizarre dream and I had a good laugh about it.

Well, it could happen!  Years ago, my friends had an intoxicated man wearing only underpants break the screen on the window and enter their bedroom in the middle of the night.  Mae started praying out loud and Marc grabbed his weapon and kept it trained on him.  He ordered him out of the house and the drunk tripped and fell on the stone floor in their foyer.  He started crying, apologizing, begging forgiveness and asked for help.  They actually ended up giving him clean sweats, some flip flops, making a sandwich and coffee, praying with the fellow, who then called the police on himself to report the two burglaries he’d committed before showing up at Mae and Marc’s house.  The cops came
and took him away.  The window was replaced with glass bricks!

No, Simple, and OP, your dreams are not prophetic. Your brain strings together random bits of information which you then process in your sleep.  Upon awakening, we try and find rational meaning in them, but for the most part, there is none.  Most dreams can be safely ignored.

If a dream is disturbing, remember it can be used by Satan to tempt you to fear, unease, paranoia, doubt, etc.  None of these are fruits of the Holy Ghost, so you can say a quick prayer reaffirming your trust in God and go your way.

  • Six signs the devil is present:
    SDFORD
    (Satan Drives Ford)

    Sadness
    Discouragement
    False reasoning
    Obstacles
    Regret
    Disturbance

If any single one is present, he is involved. Once you recognize him then you should know what to do. (Pray the Rosary, St. Michael prayer over and over, use of sacramental, etc.)

I had been watching a report by that freakish-looking anchorman --- he is totally white except for his facial features, I've even wondered if he could be an albino (that is no reflection upon him, he didn't ask to be born looking like that) --- and watching the scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind where the tall, skinny, lanky alien appears.  And that might have also been the night I had chicken tikka masala for supper.

  • Yes, dreams are just random nonsense concocted by our imagination and other parts of our physical body. They can be influenced by our health/sickness, what we ate, how tired we are, and what we learned or concerned ourselves with that day.

Let's put it this way: brush off all dreams as nonsense. If God wants you to pay heed to a dream, YOU WILL KNOW IT. He can raise His voice, as it were.

Have you read much Lives of the Saints? When a Marian apparition happens, for example, the local Bishop is *never* criticized by Our Lady for being skeptical (as he should be). In fact, Our Lady deigns to work miracles to convince him -- suggesting his skepticism is justified, as if he's doing his job. Why would Our Lord or Our Lady produce miracles to accommodate skepticism, if they didn't fully 100% approve of that skepticism?

This is excellent, and I see that it comes indirectly from St Ignatius:

There is a person in my life who exhibits all six symptoms, I talked to them tonight and told them if they didn't snap out of it, they were going to end up in a psychiatric ward.  Very depressed.  I'll see if I can find a way to share this with them, religion isn't something they're terribly fond of.

Read Matthew’s recent comment.  This combination of events and maybe spicy food could be the source of your bizarre dream.  And if so, it is neither from God nor the devil.  It doesn’t prevent the devil from using it to harass and tempt you.
Have a glass of warm milk or turkey broth before bed and sweet dreams!
Always pray before you settle into bed.  I can’t kneel, but I don’t get comfortable under the covers until I’ve prayed.  It goes a long way towards preventing disturbing dreams.
