  • What are you addicted to?

"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

  • I honestly recommend making a good confession to a real priest and receiving the sacraments faithfully while praying at least 5 decades of the rosary daily and following the advice of your confessor. You will beat your addiction with God's grace with a quarter of the struggle than those who try to go it alone. Without the grace of the sacraments and prayer, the struggle can be almost impossible.

  • I used to be addicted to cigarettes and alcohol and mortal sins. I overcame those addictions without any help such as drugs or AA meetings, except for the help I got through prayer and assistance from heaven. Cigarettes were hard for a week and then easy. Alcohol was easy when I started but I thought it would be much harder because I was really addicted to alcohol and seemed to need it to function, but when I tried to stop it was very easy. The hardest addiction to break was mortal sins. My main weapon was devotion to the Blessed Mother. It really was through prayer that I overcame my addictions and once I overcame them I did not relapse.

  • The Rosary will break your addiction, be consistent and don't give up!
I know you may think cigarettes may be a minor addiction, but I was smoking over 3 packs a day and even smoking in bed and had burn holes in my sheets- Of course I knew better than to smoke in bed but I was out of control. I could not take a full breath at 34 years old. My fingers were yellow and my son had asthma from it but I couldn't stop. It all seemed beyond me.
I was often told that it is one of the hardest addictions to break ( if you are in deep). I have heard that when you go to a rehab for narcotics, the patients seem to be able to kick the narcotics but they are all still smoking cigarettes.
I decided that I would pray the Rosary to break the addiction. It was not easy , but all of a sudden it was not impossible, and then it became easy. I haven't smoked in 26 years.  Our Lady will give you the graces you need.
Give her a chance and have confidence in her, even if you have setbacks.. that's part of the process.

  • Why do you think you are hopeless? Is your addiction secret? Confession, mortification and prayer are your first priorities. Counseling may be necessary.

  • You can't go wrong when you have Our Blessed Lady on your side.  Holy Mother Church helped men with addictions with a group that was formed known as the Sacred Heart Society.  There were manuals with guidance.  The number #1 thing to keep in mind is the frequency of the sacraments.  All the sacraments have the Powers of the Precious Blood.  One day it will not be with us. (Chapter 12 of Daniel)  A priest once told me, when I asked, " What can I do!?"  He recommended 3  rosaries a day.  I find that to be very helpful.  There is also a  sweet book titled, "All for Jesus".  It was written long ago and is reprinted now for us. www.joyfulcatholic.com where it can be purchased.  It gives you so many suggestions to please Our Lord. Also the "Glories of Mary" is fantastic!  I like to dedicate the Joyful mysteries for all religious, living or dead who care for our souls.  The Sorrowful for conversion of sinners, those in Purgatory and those in hurt, pain, etc. The Glorious for our family living and dead.  It is most comforting to remember the article of faith of the Communion of Saints.  We are being prayed for, even those in purgatory pray for us.

May you enjoy the Presence of Our Lord and His Mother.

  • I think that in these situations it is very important to be sympathetic to others who are in similar situations. It is very easy for an angel (or an angelic like person) who has never done anything wrong or had any of these temptations to sit in judgement of other people. How easy it is to fall. How hard it is to get back up.
It may be that God allows some of us to fall into these situations so that we learn that we should be patient with other people for us to recognize that we too could be in that same situation.
