  • A rather strange graphic considering their target audience.

This is from the latest TAN mailing.

Not exactly classic TAN, that's for sure!

The boy is clearly at least half asian. Either he's adopted, or the milkman is asian!

Other than that, the "perfect family"! One boy, one girl! Perfect target demographic for Catholic homeschooling circles...NOT!

  • Amazing how different boy and girl clothing is, even in the under-10 pre-pubescent crowd.

The boy has a normal T-shirt with normal short sleeves.

The girl has a 2-piece shirt, with an inner shirt that serves as "training wheels" for wearing just the outer shirt when she's older and wants to show off her assets.

And her sleeves are almost non-existent. Why? Why do women have to show more of their arm than the average man?

  • Only 2 children, definitely targeting a non or modern Catholic home.

The boy does not look Asian to me, although there are many traditional Asian Catholics, and some trads do adopt, so I'm not sure what's wrong with that.
He looks very much like my son when he was young, who was not adopted and is of European heritage.

  • Ridiculous comment on the race of the kid, first to assume all that, secondly there were lots of mixed race marriages between Filipino and Japanese women and American GIs back in the day,  they raised beautiful Catholic families.

I think Seton answered this once that they use stock photos.

Why isn't it the girl who's adopted?

You're showing your bias. Just say they don't look like siblings.

Hey, this is America, not Asia. It's ok to be biased toward the more likely case.
Asia is still only 4% Catholic. Europe is 36% Catholic.

So if you see an Asian, there is only a 4% chance he's Catholic. But if you see a European, there is a 36% chance he's Catholic.

It's not about race. It's about a formerly Traditional Catholic publisher portraying a very curious interpretation of the "average homeschooling family". Perfect boy/girl pair? One of whom is not biological? How is that normal? More like politically correct.

  • The boy does appear to have some impure blood.  I have known a few 1/2 Asians over the years--they're much more distinct in Asian features.  This boy is more like 1/4 or 1/8 of something.  It could as likely be negro as Asian.  I was trying to get a good look at his nostrils, but the angle isn't right.

The picture does depict something of modernism that I would prefer not to see.  I am not sure how noteworthy it is in comparison to the state of the world though.  So it's from TAN...  I don't think TAN's fall from orthodoxy is recent news.

I don't have a guess about who the original poster is.  But I doubt InfiniteFaith can spell TAN.

No--his complexion is off too.  And there's something about the set or shape of his eyes.  I definitely detect some impure blood.

My first reaction was that whoever started this thread was making too big a deal of it.

But on second thought, I think it's good that such subtleties not be allowed to subtly pass by without challenge.

I don't think so.  I can pretty much rule that out by the angle of his nose.  But the angle isn't good for seeing if he has spread nostrils, and, thus likely a mulatto, or not.
