  • Happy marriages are not made with controlling, dominating individuals. If she asked me for advice as she did the OP I would recommend postponing the wedding and seek counseling. NOT marriage prep from the church, but personal counseling from a good Catholic family counselor.  Controlling, domineering individuals make lousy spouses.

  • From the O.P., it would seem that the fiancé who insists on home births is way too idealistic, and not realistic enough.

I was the same way (too idealistic, though for different reasons) regarding home birth, and my husband and I decided on a home birth with our first, and we didn't have any insurance at the time. The problem was, I developed pre-eclampsia which wasn't detected by the midwife until I went into labor, and so I was taken to the hospital where I after the birth I was in intensive care for two days, and in a hospital room for three more days. The baby was fine. It was expensive, though.

My husband refused to ever try for another home birth, so we opted for a midwife in a hospital for the other babies, which worked out fine, and there were no abortions performed at that hospital.

Yes, pre-eclampsia seems to be fairly common anymore.  I've had a couple relatives develop the condition during pregnancy as well.
