  • Our priest made a reference to how surprised he was how few families' had holy water fonts in their homes.  I myself was surprised he'd mentioned this because he is a Novus Ordo priest and also because I (being a convert) was unaware of this being a regular practice of your average Catholic family.

I'm not against having a holy water font in the house, but I do have a practical question.  We who live here rarely use the front door to come in and out of the house.  Since our car is parked in the garage, we usually come in and out through that door which opens first into a very small laundry room.  This is also where we keep the cat litter box.

So my question is: should we have one holy water font inside the front door?  Or should we have one by the back door ... which, unfortunately, the only place to put it would be right above the cat litter box, which seems wrong and disrespectful.

    ?

Strange / silly question maybe ... but that is why there is an anonymous forum!  :laugh1:

  • Because of the design of the house, we have 4 holy water fonts on various different interior walls between rooms.  Only one is near a door going to the outside.

  • It was the practice before Vat II to have a font in every bedroom and at every entrance door.

In school each classroom had 2 doors and a 3rd door in the cloak room.  A child never missed blessing themselves with holy water and flicking the remainder from their fingers on the floor, saying "for the Poor Souls in Purgatory"  This would be done coming into the classroom, in and out for recess, leaving and returning from lunch, in and out for afternoon recess and leaving for home and any other times we walked through the door!

We have occassion to have SSPX priests in our home frequently and NEVER have I seen even one use the font at our door.

  • There is a partial indulgence for making the sign of the cross with holy water.

  • Is there wall space which separates the laundry room from whichever the room is that you walk into from the laundry room?  If so place it there.

Our laundry room opens into the family room so I put one font on the wall by the door in the family room that connects to the laundry room.

  • Thank you for your suggestions.  I don't know why I couldn't figure it out myself, but you've given me some ideas that I think I will be able to use.
