  • What are some gift ideas for a priest when visiting a major shrine or basilica?  I am leaving next week to visit one and would like to get something for my priest.

  • Have a Mass said for him.  I hope it is a traditional church, that way the Mass will have Graces for him.

  • What ever you do, don't give him "The Popes Cologne".  It smells wonderful and is the exact ingredient used to make a cologne for Pius IX.  But, woman will accuse you if you are a woman giving it and you will be slandered and detracted to high heaven if you are a man giving it-not to mention all the suffering the priest will have if word gets out and God knows amongst trads-word gets out and they will make sure it gets out. There is something about trads...they seem to just lust after detraction and gossip.  Bad news about someone-anyone- seems to eat at them at a greater intensity every year.

  • I got my friend some black "liturgical socks" just for a bit of fun.

I bought half a dozen pairs of high quality black sox and then had various Latin and English phrases embroidered onto them in liturgical colours.

Funny, useful and a good talking point when the priest is giving a talk or a catechism lesson.

There are plenty of home based people with embroidery machine who will do the lettering for about $6 per pair.

  • I gave our priest, as a gift, a set of older books made for priests based on the Psalms. It was a four volume set of, "Pusillum: A Vademecuм of Sacerdotal Virtue in Brief Meditations". I thought it was really nice, and he seemed to really like it.

  • Perhaps a framed image of the location (or some part of it) if it has retained a traditional appearance? If that is to much $$, even a small prayer card or bookmark depicting the location inside a card expressing prayers you've perhaps said for him while there would certainly make it known that you remembered your priest during the trip.

If the history of the place or person it represents is somewhat lesser-known, it would also be a good source of reading material on the subject.

  • I asked my son, who is a Byzantine rite priest, what he would like under such circuмstances.  He said he would a appreciate a book about the shrine or a medal or icon of the saint connected to it.  In general, he said priests often appreciate books, or gift cards for bookstores.  Someone once gave him a complete set of the Latin and Greek Fathers.  He was beyond ecstatic.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir
